Bridges to Prosperity - Kapkwombola Uganda 2019

"The need is great, the residents of the Kurumbono community launch a call ! For this new year 2019 from 12 to 27 January, Join us in ending poverty due to rural isolation".

Freyssinet in partnership with T-Ingénierie joined Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) for building a suspended FootBridge in Kapkombola, Uganda.

The bridge will provide yearround safe access for all members of the community to health care, education and economic opportunity. They will transform the way people plan for and invest in their future.

"Making it possible, Building together by cross-cultural collaboration".

Freyssinet & T-Ingénierie collaborate with B2P staff and local workers from the Kurumbono community to meet this challenge, and to emphasize their unique skill sets in the project. Work to complete project preparation, construction on site, and post-tasks as designated by the following Travel Team Roles.

The Communication is responsible for photography, videography or interviews for directly collecting media on the field.

"Rural isolation is a root cause of poverty. By building a FootBridge over impassable river, we create a critical foundation for economic opportunity, helthcare and education."

The residents of the Kurumbono community are young farmers who grow maize and beans. Over 690 community members will be directly affected by the construction of a FootBridge.

The Cheptweyi River is too dangerous to cross due to flooding during four months of the year. Due to site topography, residents are trapped by high cliffs above and below, and they have to wait for the water to go down. During flood season, access is often blocked to the market, health centers, and schools. Over 50 people have been injured attempting river crossings without a safe access.

The Kapkwombola Suspended Bridge will create a strong connection for all residents of the Kurumbono community, and all other people from the Kapsinda municipality.

"Supported by gravity anchors, the suspended cable pedestrian bridge is based on traditional designs found in Nepal and Peru".

The cables supporting the walkway surface hang from mansonry abutments on each bank of the Cheptweyi River. The FootBridge of 40 meters span is located in a gentle sloping valley to provide safe access during flood season.

The structure has been designed by B2B engineering staff. The bridge will be built in collaboration with Freyssinet & T-Ingénierie Travel Team, B2P staff supervision, and also maximum community participation.

Achieving the proper freeboard of approximately 3 meter high over the maximum water level is the most challenging aspect of this bridge type, and they may require substantial amounts of materials to stabilise abutments.

"Built to last, Built to create connection, and to inspire for other solutions. Bridge will sustain time, weather, and heavy use".

The Travel Team will play a key role in connecting the local communities through the Kapwombola Footbridge. Freyssinet and T-Ingénierie take this opportunity of demonstrating/modeling Safety on the job site, elevating the level of Technicality for future projects in the Kpsinda region, and bringing individuals together in the pursuit of inspiration.

The construction of Kapkwombola Suspended Bridge serve also as training project for local foremen and superintendents. By connecting professionals with their local counterparts, Freyssinet & T-Ingénierie support the development of resident bridge builders who will continue to support infrastructure projects in the region long after the Travel Team has returned home.

À quoi servira la collecte

"We believe that safe access is a human right. When the Kurumbono community will get a year-round access to key resources, all residents have greater freedom. Fredom to choose how they better their lives".

For the Kurumbono community, connection is anything but an abstract concept, especially when the Cheptweyi River flood and residents are cut off from vital resources.

With just one bridge, we can leverage local talent and resources to strengthen the impact of all services being provided to a rural community. Your gift, along with those of the Travel Team, helps us to reach our goal, and achieve the construction of Kapkwombola Suspended Bridge.

See how your donation will help the Kapkwombola Suspended Bridge Project and contribute for the benefit of developing isolated communities:
