The project, started in 2010, arose organically out of fascinated conversations about Cape Town, often described as the most beautiful city in the world and not a particularly African city because of its European influence and architecture.

Its complex past is linked to its role as a slave city. And the tension that emerges from these competing claims: European city, African city, Creole city fuel the city’s present contradictions. The juxtaposition of pictures and text together into a loosely knit body of work query the glib summation “the most beautiful city in the world.” And there are new claims on the city’s identity. Immigration from the North threatens to transform Cape Town from a non-African city to a Pan African one.

Other themes explored in the work include the bourgeois lifestyle and fear of crime.

The project is a collaboration between myself and the writer and journalist Olufemi Terry.

Il progetto è iniziato nel 2010, da una conversazione nata da una precisa idea circa la percezione estetica che le persone hanno di Città del Capo, spesso considerata la città piu bella del mondo e allo stesso tempo la città meno africana, vista la forte influenza europea e non ultima la sua architettura.

Il passato è fortemente segnato dal ruolo che la città aveva nella tratta degli schiavi prima e dalle relative politiche di apartheid dopo. Le tensioni che emergono nella società odierna rivendicano quei diritti a lungo negati, si hanno così più città nella stessa città che rappresentano altrettante culture, quella europea, africana e meticcia o più correttamente coloured. Questo aspetto contribuisce allo sviluppo di forti contraddizioni odierne. Il lavoro mette in relazione testo e immagini realizzate in modo indipendente e tenta di analizzare la realtà sociale della così detta "città più bella del mondo".

Il testo, dalla sua, rivendica una nuova identità che più si addice alla condizione attuale. La forte presenza di immigrati dal resto del continente africano porta a considerare Città del Capo invece che la città meno africana, addirittura la città pan-africana.

Le immagini completano la visione della città attarverso temi quali la "paura urbana" un preciso lifestyle ed un indubbia bellezza del paesaggio naturale.

Il progetto è una collaborazione tra me e lo scrittore e giornalista Olufemi Terry.

Although the aim of the collaboration from the very beginning was to make a book, the process has unfolded in a subtle and reflective fashion, with the two collaborators working independently. The writer and photographer leave it to viewers of the work to perceive connections between word and image.

The dummy has been shortlisted in 2012 at 5 FotobookFestival DummyAward, shown at Photobookshow-D at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, at f/stop PhotoBook Festival in Leipzig, at Unseen-Unpublished Amsterdam.

La realizzazione di un libro è stata fin dall'inizio lo scopo del progetto. La selezione delle immagini e la realizzazione del testo sono state infatti pensate per una pubblicazione, con particolare attenzione ad un processo indipendente di realizzazione dei contenuti, solo influenzati da idee condivise e di un vissuto comune. Il dummy realizzato nel 2012 è stato selezionato tra i finalisti al 5 FotobookFestival DummyAward, esposto a Le Bal Parigi, al Photobookshow-D Museo Finlandese di Fotografia di Helsinki, al f/stop PhotoBook Festival di Lipzia oltre che al Unseen-Unpublished di Amsterdam.

Olufemi Terry has recently written about Afrofuturism, Kony2012, and Cape Verde. His essays and fiction have been published in the American Scholar, Guernica, Chimurenga, and he has been writer in residence at Georgetown University and Cove Park. His short story "Stickfighting Days" won the Caine Prize for African writing in 2010. He lives in Germany and the U.S.
