Allow 6 young contemporary artists to establish a 3 months creative residency in Los Angeles at 44O HOPE!
The 44O HOPE in Los Angeles, situated in the heart of downtown will open its doors in November 2013.
Third MAD Agency project space after la SIRA in Asnières-Sur-Seine, France, and the '434' in Taroudant, Morocco, the 44O HOPE is an artist residency which aims to favour contemporary artistic research and production.
Over 4500sqft of space, in an ancient industrial building, the 44O HOPE will host six French artists of different mediums for three months, who's only worry will be to create.
At the end of this residency, the artists will exhibit their work in Los Angeles and upon their return in Paris at Galerie Loft Sévigné.

Andrey, one of the artists present during the '434' residency in Morocco, is going to Los Angeles to further his collaborative video work, to create a book from his photographic body of work and to perform in front of a new audience.
At 44O HOPE, Boris hopes to explore new mediums: sculpture, musical production and performance, whilst continuing his subtle voyage towards experimental video art, which he hopes to share in the city of cinema.
Nina Lili J
Nina Lili J, first non-SIRA resident artist to be invited to participate in a MAD Agency overseas residency will arrive in the city of angels only a few days after the launch of her first solo album. Naturally she will make use of this residency to start touring this album, involving local musicians and 44O HOPE artists. She plans to concentrate on new collaborations and will develop some new photo and video work.
Paul will repeat his experience at '434' where he recorded an album -'ROUDANI 434'- with local musicians. He aims to capture the Angeleno and California sound, focusing on lyrics making a reference to the American Dream, recorded in english, with a road music feel. As always, he will provide recording and musical expertise and support for the artists.
Chi Chi Menendez
Chi Chi is going to Los Angeles to reconnect with her photography. It's a good moment for her to develop new series, new concepts and to allow new inspirations to enter her work!
Anatole is the curator of this residency. He will run all the MAD Agency operations on American soil and organise the exhibitions in Los Angeles and Paris. Himself a conceptual artist, the residency will allow him to develop new paintings and conceptual performances.
La SIRA is MAD Agency's headquarters in France from which the artists (a total of 16) produce the majority of their work. La SIRA opened in 2010 in an old 40,000sqft printing house just north of Paris, in Asnières-Sur-Seine. Both a production and a conceptual space, La SIRA over three floors is divided into different production, exhibition, performance and meeting areas
The '434' is MAD Agency's second project space after La SIRA. Set in Taroudant, southern Morocco, in the middle of the Souss-Massa-Draa valley, the '434' opened in November 2012 and received 5 artists from La SIRA for three months. The '434' was created in the spirit of creating a collaboration between our artists and the local craftsmen and artists to form a dynamic and contemporary 'cultural bridge' between Orient and Occident.
Allocation of funds
MAD Agency's overseas residencies, 44O HOPE or '434' in Morocco are spaces which favour contemporary creation. Apart from their incredible creative aspect, these residencies are also great meeting places, where collaborations happen, and this outreach from young artists to discover a new culture can be assimilated in some way to artistic diplomacy.
To guarantee the best level of artistic production, we liberate the artists from any material constraints: they are lodged and fed to dispense them of everyday life details and worries so as to give them the time to focus on the realisation of their projects.
Los Angeles is a city going through an exceptional cultural rush of energy! This past year, many major initiatives have been linking Paris to LA (Paris Photo LA, Ceci N'est Pas..) and we wish to create a real dialogue between our artists and the local artists.
To make this project happen in Los Angeles, we have to triple the usual budget allotted to our winter residencies; we therefore appeal to your generosity!
Of the 12,000€ (one third of our total budget) we aim to raise, about 3000€ will be used every month to contribute to the expenses of 44O HOPE (rentals, utility bills etc..). The rest will be saved to help towards the production costs of our LA exhibition!
The two other thirds of the budget of 44O HOPE are formed by the artist and MAD Agency contribution to the project.
