THE PROJECT

This project came to be when the aikido master André Cognard and photographer Eric Genillier met. André Cognard is the creator and director of the "Kobayashi Ryu", a traditional aikido school recognized in Japan, established in throughout Europe, America, Africa and Asia. Eric Genillier works as director of photography in advertising and documentary films. He lives in Paris. In 2010, he discovered this master's dojo, nestled in the heart of a national park - the Pilat - near St Etienne and Lyon, and began shooting a series of photographs.

In 2012, when his school was officially recognized by the prestigious Japanese aikido organization - the "Dai Nippon Butokukai" - Mr. André Cognard was looking for a symbolic gift to present to the honorary president of the organization, Sosai Higashi Fushimi Jigo, uncle of Emperor of Japan. It was on this occasion that he asked Eric Genillier to work on an art book (*) featuring photographs of the dojo.

The book project we are asking you to help us fund is based on this work. It has been enriched with new photographs and an initiatic tale written by André Cognard. André Cognard is the author of many books on the ethics and spirit of aikido and he has chose to tell the life of his master Hirokazu Kobayashi, a disciple of the founder of aikido Ueshiba, in the form of a tale.

Part of the income will be donated to the Académie Autonome d’Aikido Kobayashi Hirokazu (Autonomous Academy of Aikido Kobayashi Hirokazu), representing the Kobayashi Ryu in France who is in charge of the dojo. The income will help finance the development and the preservation of the dojo's park in view of a major international event that will be organized in 2017 by the school.

THE DOJO

The Kobayashi Hirokazu Kinen Aikidojo  is the «dojo* of all budoka working towards human peace and harmony with budo’s true strength – love. »

*« Dojo » Literally in Japanese, dō means the way (it is the same character as the Chinese Tao), a dojo is the place where one studies the way.

« The Kobayashi Hirokazu Kinen Aikidojo is home to my master’s aikido. I wanted it to preserve the memory of his name and art for future generations. This hugely talented and generous budoka illuminated my life. I wish to pay eternal homage to what he gave me and to the seeds he sowed in the lives of those who had the good fortune to encounter him. My task was therefore to create a place that would keep his spiritual legacy alive. My greatest desire is for everyone who crosses its threshold to feel how kind and open-hearted he was and be inspired to pursue his life’s work. This is why the Kobayashi dojo is also the dojo of all budoka who work towards human peace and harmony with budo’s true strength – love. » André Cognard

THE TALE (excerpt)

Temple dédié à Inari

(…) Koichi wants to pray but he does not know who to pray to. One evening, whilst the sun bathes in the Setonaikai and he reluctantly decides to go home to his mother and four sisters, Koichi walks on a mamoshi’s tail. Turning around abruptly the mamoshi says to a startled Koichi “Watch where you put your feet!”. Normally, a mamoshi does not speak it bites. However Koichi says: “Sorry, I did not see you." The mamoshi changes into a fox and says, "I'm not large enough for you to see me! Take your foot off my tail! " Koichi complies and the fox frees its beautiful red tail. "I’m sorry," Koichi says, "I thought you were a mamoshi. I did not see you were a fox. " " A fox? " says the fox "and whatever next! " And the fox turns into a beautiful Buddha, a huge Buddha, thirty feet high. " Sorry! " Koichi says " I thought I saw a fox, but who are you? "And the Buddha laughs:" I'm the one you can pray to now. I will listen to your prayers if they are sincere "

Koichi is happy. He asks: "How can I be sure I’m sincere? "

"Being who you are as I am who I am. "

"Thank you Master! " says Koichi. But the Buddha is angry: "I am not your master! Do you even know what that word means? How can you since you have no master? Look for your master! ". Koichi promises to always be the one he is and to seek his master. (…)
