DVDvision le mook Clint Eastwood & Dirty Harry

"Go ahead! Make My Day!" For its second issue, DVDvision honors Clint Eastwood and Dirty Harry. Update 01/23 : The KKBB campaign has ended! You can still pre-order the mook on the official magazine site www.dvdvision.co with free shipping up to it's release. "In the 70s and 80s, Dirty Harry outlined Clint Eastwood's career, but didn't fully define it," says narrator Morgan Freeman in Richard Schickel's documentary The Eastwood Factor included as a bonus HD feature in the Blu-ray of Hereafter (2010). We love Morgan Freeman, and we admire the work of the late Richard Schickel, especially on Clint, but someone must have mixed up or pronounced the sentence wrong. In the 70s and 80s, Dirty Harry on the contrary completely defined the career of Clint Eastwood, while his other films only outlined it. A mythical character of the living legend of the Cinema, accused of all evils, today still as controversial: Dirty Harry made Eastwood a superstar, with all the problems that title engendered. But it also paved the way for an absolutely unique first part of his career, and defined the Malpaso style of the first period (the production company of the great Clint): an explosive and punk cocktail, mix of corrosive and second-degree satirical comedy, exploration of Americana, and ultra-violent action scenes, imported and adapted from the films of Sergio Leone, to whom we owe in direct line all the muscle-bound action cinema and killer one liners of the 80's. A counter-culture icon Victim from the beginning of a misunderstanding, maintained by many film critics with arrogant bad faith and in a surrealist denial of reality, Dirty Harry was the standard character of Clint Eastwood's career, to the point of irrigating all his other creations for a quarter of a century. He perfectly embodies the actor's genius idea, initiated in the proto-Harry film, Coogan's bluff (1968): bringing the western man into the modern world, and exploring the explosive showdown! Although the same critics (and their descendants, because they reproduced), still today rewrite history and try to make us believe that he would have been the hero of a conservative America, Harry was the counterculture hero. "The Jews, the foreigners, the Angliches, the Irish, the niggers, the Chinks, the Japs, the Mexicans take your pick"* , but also the rockers and a few enlightened hippies: they filled all the halls, shouting encouragement, applauding the inspector's one-liners, directed to the bad guys and his superiors. A huge character popular with "minorities". The success was such that the composer Lalo Schifrin had released a soul version of the theme of the first film, which was a hit exclusively in the clubs of the black neighborhoods of the early seventies! Hated by John Wayne, who embodied conservatism, Harry was an icon of the counterculture, and so was Clint Eastwood. Despite the efforts of several French people (Pierre Rissient, Bertrand Tavernier, François Guérif), for decades, for the actor-director to be taken seriously, it was necessary to wait for Unforgiven (1992), a testamentary work of this period, and the Oscars of 1993, so that Clint was finally recognized by his peers, and began a more respectable turn, closing the door on this first part of his career. A door that he will leave ajar, however, allowing himself delectable explorations from time to time (Bloodworks in 2002, or Gran Torino in 2008), just to continue to tickle with great provocations the old slum critics and their degenerations when the mood takes him. Remember that "Opinions are like assholes: everybody has one!".* *Lines taken from the films Dirty Harry (1971) and The Dead Pool (1988). A conversation with Clint! To open the magazine, the interview welcomes... Clint Eastwood! Clint is now very old. But from 1979 to 1983, when the past was not yet so distant, he gave a series of interviews, long remained unpublished, to his friend Paul Nelson, the editor of the vinyl column in Rolling Stone magazine, then the number 1 counter-culture magazine! Eventually collected by Kevin Avery, the tapes of these lost interviews, then found after Paul Nelson's death in a shoebox, were transcribed and published in a book called Conversations with Clint: Paul Nelson's Lost Interviews with Clint Eastwood, 1979- 1983. Kevin Avery has kindly authorized us to publish excerpts in French, which will constitute the interview at the start of the magazine.* And the barrel will spit! Clint sets the record straight, and he answers everything: his omnipresence in the writing of all his films, the accusations of fascism, political correctness, why the black audiences does not see any racism in his films , his fascination with jazz, the supposed contributions of John Milius to the first film in the saga, not to mention his casting in Apocalypse Now opposite Steve McQueen. Paul Nelson asks all the right questions, and Clint shoots on sight! You will finally find out if The Gauntlet (1977) was initially envisaged as a Dirty Harry film, why Frank Frazetta hung up on him the first time he called him, how Sudden impact (1983) was written under Clint's supervision behind the back of the Warner studio, and why Don Siegel and Clint had a fight after the first screening, because they didn't agree on the ending! *If you are Clint fans reading the entire book is highly recommended. You can order it on Amazon here. The contents of the mook We increase the pagination to 132 pages, which is the historical one of the magazine! The 5 main features of the magazine, written by David Fakrikian, are devoted to the 5 Inspector Harry: Dirty Harry (1971), Magnum Force (1973), The Enforcer (1976), Sudden impact (1983), The Dead pool (1988), and their double films: Play Misty for me (1971), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1973), The Gauntlet (1977), Tightrope (1984) and Bird (1988). The journalist explores the films and their policies, which skilfully accompanied the Blaxploitation and feminist movements of the 70s, but also their relationship with their twin films and with the action cinema of the 80s/90s. Is the final script of Magnum Force (1973) more the work of John Milius or Michael Cimino? Which filmed scenes were cut in Magnum Force? To what extent Clint supports the direction of films that he does not sign? What part did Terrence Malick take in the scenario of Tightrope (1984)? What is the correct movie format of The dead pool (1988)? We give you the answers! We review Harry's surprise appearances in other media like the ones below (Harry Warns Us About the Crack, video shown before ALIENS prints in 1986, and the clubbed music video on MTV for Sudden Impact in 1983 that the whole world seems to have forgotten)! The other films in Clint Eastwood's filmography from 1964 to 1992, from For a Fistful of Dollars to Unforgiven - will be reviewed by the magazine's historical editorial staff, and some new writers, according to their importance in his filmography. What are the best home cinema versions of the Dollar trilogy? How to find the 70mm version in two parts of Where Eagles Dare (1968) in Home video? How is it that "corrected" versions of the french dub of High plains drifter (1973) circulate on the internet? On which streaming service can you find Bird (1988), Pink Cadillac (1989) and White Hunter Black Heart (1990) in HD with the original mixes? This issue will be stuffed with Clint in Blu-ray, Streaming, DVD and UHD! It's going to be a blast! The icing on the cake, Christophe Lemaire looks back on all the appearances in the films and series of the 50s and 60s of the great Clint in the baby face version, before stardom, from Revenge of the Creature (1955) to the Longest Day (1962) ! We'll have fun ! We tried the ultimate trip! Not 2001 but all 217 episodes from 8 seasons of Rawhide! A marathon, where we were surprised to discover many ideas that were taken up in Clint's films long after! And even better, we discovered that Charles Bronson as a guest-star and Clint crossed paths! The scene below where they both stare at each other, ready to draw, is a historic moment, only available on DVD! The opportunity to resurrect the TV Series section! We have seen the lost western banned by Clint in 1966, The magnificent stranger, from the Rawhide series. And we explain to you why Clint stopped its distribution and buried the film! Dirty Harry game cancelled! We come back to this incredible project which had the full participation of Clint Eastwood, but also Gene Hackman and Lucy Liu, announced in 2006! The CD section returns, dedicated to the main composer of the music of the Harry saga, Lalo Schifrin! Did you know that Clint owned a record label, Viva Records Inc.? We explore the label and the hidden treasures of its discography, including exclusive original mixes from the Dirty Harry saga! Will you take 12 more Dirty Harrys? We chronicle the lot of spin-off novels! And we find the elements that inspired The Dead Pool! This issue will be produced in collaboration with The Clint Eastwood archives, the n°1 site for documentation devoted to Clint's filmography! Different editions For this KissKissBankBank campaign, we are continuing in the format set up with the first issue, offering you a wide choice of different versions of the mook: soft or hardcover, and with 3 variant covers, including a Coogan's Bluff, the proto Harry film, all very limited! A series of bookmarks also come with the rewards, as pictured above. The 132-page mook will be printed in color on coated paper in all editions in the same format as the previous one (similar to the Mad Movies Classics, which we thank again!). Shipments will be made by a specialized company. This time, they will be carried out in France and internationally at the same time, which was not possible at the first issue for administrative reasons. The first pages ! 03/12 ! The first pages of the magazine. Watch this section which we will update regularly. Note that the pages are a constant work in progress and may change up until the magazine release. Lost and found! ⚡ The first unpublished advertising poster of DVDvision n°1 on newsstands in October 1999! The only existant copy. The magazine was finally released on October 19, 1999. ⚡ Issue #1 was originally supposed to contain a Clint Eastwood feature written by Marc Toullec of Mad Movies. The feature was entirely written, and the pages set, but then we had to delete it for lack of space! ⚡ The DVDvision collection vol.2 #1 About the Editor/Founder Journalist at USA Magazine, then at S.F.X., Mad Movies, Impact and Generation Series, and contributor to the launch of Comic Box, David Fakrikian created DVDvision in 1999, the first magazine in the world to offer a DVD in each issue. Allocation of funds

Some numbers Producing a Mook independently, while offering a quality product, in the current context, is very difficult. The paper prices has increase since the start of the conflict, which makes it more and more difficult for the magazine to maintain its financial balance, especially since DVDvision is printed in Eastern Europe. That's why we're counting on you! Not only on your support, but also on your sharing of the link to this page on your networks, so that as many copies as possible are pre-sold, which will allow us to produce this exciting new issue in the best conditions! For greater clarity, we give you below the breakdown of the production and distribution costs of this Mook. They may vary slightly if additional levels are reached: By pre-ordering DVDvision directly on KissKissBankBank: You will receive the magazine directly at home by post. You allow us to reserve the paper at the printer in advance, thus avoiding the constant increase in manufacturing costs due to the current context. You support the development of an independent media dedicated to the chronicle of UHD, Blu-ray, DVD discs. THANK YOU ALL!
