Help us to acquire a 140-meter-long painting by Sylvie Selig

Help the Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon acquire River of no Return so that this giant painting can become part of a French public collection! Your donations will gradually unveil the work of Sylvie Selig, visitors favourite artist of the 2022 Biennial of Contemporary Art. And we're offering you a whole host of arty rewards. The more donations you make, the more the work is revealed. Little by little, River of no Return unfolds before our eyes. Join this collective adventure! Our project: We'd like to acquire for the macLYON's collection, and thus for France's heritage, an immense 140-meter-long painting by artist Sylvie Selig: 3 times larger than the one presented at Fagor during the last Biennale d'art contemporain! The artist: Sylvie Selig Sylvie Selig, 82, lives and works in Paris. She has traveled extensively: she moved to Australia with her mother at the age of 13, where her schooling was in English, an explanation for her predilection for this language. She then lived in London, Paris and New York (where she worked as an illustrator for magazines and major publishers such as Esquire, New York Magazine, Condé Nast, Grove Press, Doubleday, etc.) before returning to Paris. Sylvie Selig set up her studio in the Pigalle district 28 years ago. Here she creates with a great determination. Her work has long remained ignored by the major art circuits. "Entering her studio is like crossing the threshold into another world" Margaux Brugvin Sylvie Selig has come a long way in her career, and her exceptional productivity has earned her well-deserved late recognition. A gifted draughtswoman as a child, Sylvie Selig (b. Nice, 1941) lived in Australia until she was 17, when she had her first exhibition. Her life resembles that of a novel, so much has she traveled before settling permanently in Paris. (Le Quotidien de l'art, March 8, 2023) The role of the Biennale (and Instagram!) in her recognition Sylvie Selig was spotted on Instagram by Sam Bardaouil et Till Fellrath, the curators of the last Lyon Biennale manifesto of Fragility (September 14 - December 31, 2022). They met while they were preparing the Biennale and they offered her to exhibit at Usines Fagor the oil-on-canvas Stateless and 28 characters of herWeird Family. The work macLYON wishes to acquire "It's the river odyssey of 3 characters, two boys and a girl, and their encounter with contemporary art. It took me 3 years to complete, because oil paint takes a long time to dry. There are 140 references to contemporary art for 140 meters of canvas". In 2012, Sylvie Selig debuted River of no Return (140m long by 2m20 high), a gigantic oil painting on canvas evoking the odyssey of three characters on a river and their encounters with contemporary art. The work was completed in 2015, and the artist worked on it for 3 years, portion by portion, as her studio is not big enough to unroll it. As Sylvie Selig says, "I've never yet seen the work in its entirety! The story is written beforehand, in English: "My paintings are stories. For each painting, I have the scenario". The macLYON The Musée d'art contemporain de lyon (macLYON), based at the Cité Internationale in Lyon since 1995 and dedicated to today's art, transforms itself completely for each of its exhibitions. ils collection of over 1600 works includes monumental installations.

Allocation of funds

What will the funds be used for? The Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon is interested in acquiring this museum-quality work, due to its size and subject matter. This purchase, although very favorably negotiated, represents a substantial budget. It can therefore only be conceived within the framework of a mobilization of all (individuals, public and private, companies). This is the reason why the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon is launching a crowdfunding to raise part of the cost of this acquisition, to make it possible in 2023. The target amount is €80,000. How to finance this acquisition? The purchase of River of no Return was negotiated with the artist at €140,000. 40,000€ has already been spared in the museum's acquisition budget. 20,000€ has arrived directly to the artist 80,000€ is needed from crowdfunding. What can you do? Each and every one of you, whatever your means, can take action: all support is precious to us! You can share our acquisition project with your friends and family, and spread the word on social networks. You can donate as little as €10 (i.e. a real cost of €3.40 after tax deduction), and you'll be listed among our donors and will be able to attend the evening organized to discover the work at macLYON. What the museum offers in return To thank you for your generosity, we've come up with some nice museum-related rewards. Please note that under French tax legislation on sponsorship, the amount of your donation may not exceed 25% of the total. Why support this acquisition? If macLYON acquires this work, it guarantees that it will become part of France's cultural heritage. As such, it is inalienable and cannot be resold or donated. The work will be exhibited regularly at the museum, and may also travel the world on loan to other museums. In addition to enriching the holdings of the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon, you will also be helping to pass on a cultural heritage to future generations, and to raise its profile in France and abroad. When can you see the work? The macLYON is planning a major Sylvie Selig exhibition from March 2024, with River of no Return as the highlight! Donors of €20 or more will be invited to discover this new acquisition during an exceptional evening! Some examples of giant works already in our collection At macLYON, we like large works, and our museum lends itself particularly well to this, as our exhibition spaces are large 1000 m2 platters with no load-bearing walls! Our collection includes Robert Filliou's Recherche sur l'Origine, which measures 89 metres; Robert Kusmirovski's Stronghold, an 883 m3 cylinder; Cai Guo-Qiang's Cultural Melting Bath, which weighs 38 tonnes; and Ilya Kabakov's Le Navire, made up of 1,896 different elements!
