La Valise de Lisette
Who is behind this project? Lydia Behar, Lisette Cohen Abouth's daughter, is the creative mind behind this illustrated book, a project to perpetuate her story to younger generations. She received the support of the association "Muestros dezaparesidos", which works for the memory of the Spanish-Jewish community of France. Her friends and relatives accompanied Lydia in this beautiful adventure, and in the joy of celebrating Lisette's 100th birthday. La valise de Lisette tells the story of Lisette Cohen Abouth, one of the last survivors of Auschwitz. This 70-pages illustrated book is intended for everyone from the age of 10 and up. Lisette was born in 1922 in Paris and will celebrate her 100th birthday this year. "La valise de Lisette" is dedicated to her. It seemed essential to tell Lisette's story and to share her testimony with the younger generations, at a time when the last witnesses of the camps are disappearing. Her story is representative of many Spanish-Jewish ascendance families persecuted in France during the Occupation. Arrested in Paris in May 1944, Lisette was deported with her parents to Auschwitz-Birkenau and then to Bergen-Belsen. Saved at the last minute, she was one of the only members of her family to survive and was repatriated to France in June 1945. Upon her return, she managed to rebuild her life, despite the many after-effects of the war. Lisette found the strength to live and her testimony is a message for the present and future. Her story tells of resistance, courage and hope, in the face of hatred and indifference.
