Lab-REV: le voilier laboratoire ambassadeur de la révolution numérique

When Adrien buys the "Ouf!" in 2010, et refresh it with Oliver and Leo, they have no clue what they're getting into. The three students sail on all western coasts of France on this 7 meter long sailboat. Their friends come aboard for sailing lessons, and share their passion. Aboard, with the lack of money, everything has to be done by themselves. A deception that will be very expensive: they can't make their own sailing equipment!

The freedom of living at sea makes them aware of Nature's beauty, and teach them how to respect it.

In November 2013, Adrien walks into a FabLab, one of those workshops offering digital fabrication. An hour later he holds a 3D printed cleat, that is 3 times cheaper than an industrial one. But Leo is sceptical about its mechanical resistance. Oliver insists on the economical advantages if it is solid enough. Once the second prototype is printed, the lab tests are a success: it's time to try it in real conditions: at sea!

But it will be the "Ouf!" last cruise: colliding with an unidentified floating object, Oliver and Adrien are sinking! Even if they manage to bring the boat back, the two old friends are chocked. The only good news is the 3D printed gear has held up well. Conclusions have to be established: the "Ouf!" isn't the right boat to test those prototypes. "Now that we have the first conclusive results, I want to go further: we need to set a challenge, an oceanic scaled experience to demonstrate it works out!" says Adrien.

All formers ship's boys will be required: our friends are now ingeneers and naval architects: we will find a solution to make sailing cheaper! We all gather around our ecological commitment. The challenge is obvious: a Mediterranean sailing tour without fossil energies. 5000 miles in total autonomy, with renewable sources of energy we will build by ourselves.

During the trip, we will need to test our wind-turbines, optimize our water-turbines and repair our sailing equipment. This open-source experiment needs a special platform: a sailing laboratory! Our choice goes to "Karukera", a nice 11 meter long ketch, built in 1968.

Aboard, there will be no oil, no gas: everything has to be renewable! An electric engine would be way too expensive, therefore we choose to modify our engine so it uses biofuel. In each harbour, we will need to collect local restaurants' frying oil and recycle it. Compact electric rice-cooker will allow us to cook without pollluting. We need to transform this wooden boat into a micro fabrication factory. Our partner Open-Edge helps us develop a special 3D-printer that works at sea, accepting 90° leaning angles!  Now that we're developping the prototypes, we need to refresh the boat! This future itinerant research center at seamen's service should allow to reduce the cost sailing and contribute to make it a lot more ecologic!

The Crew

With limited places on board, everyone won't be able to sail simultaneously. Only two of us will do the whole trip, and the other will make shifts all across the Mediterranean Sea.

The permanents

Adrien Marchandise, captain and project leader

Already captain on the "Ouf!", and sailing instructor, Adrien is an experimented seamen. Oceanograph and naval architect, his dream would be to design more ecologic sailing boats. Creator of the Lab-REV concept, he gathered a team to lead this project to success! His philosophy? "You don't have problems, just solutions!"

Olivier Leynaud, Renewable energies responsible, and second in command

Material ingeneer, and Naval Architect, Oliver has a lot of experiences in research labs and behind a desk. But he mostly is a fiddle adventurer. Dedicating his WE to try his skate-board prototypes during 150 miles rides, he also built his own windsurfs. Using his family sailboat, he trains to sail single-handed, at night, with fresh winds. His experience on wind-turbines and hydro-turbines projects, combined with his seamenship, makes him one of the driving force of Lab-REV's team.

The free electrons:

Léo Talotte, Material responsible

Experimented sailing instructor, Leo also is a material ingeneer and a Naval Architect. He works in a french laboratory to develop a stronger 3D printing material. He manages to only use recycled materials! "Seamens have always been helping eachothers, it is time to open them to the digital revolution!"

Yahia Missaoui, Webmaster and fishing responsible

Also ingenner, Yahia is a pro behind a computer. He allowed us to launch the project when he created an online platform to share it, and keeps us in the rails when we start complex and boring technical explanations. He suggested us to push the challenge further: what if we also try to be food autonomous?

Pablo Arias, Prototypes responsible and Karukera's DJ

When you hear Pablo play the piano, you can just see him as a musician. Also an electronical ingeneer, he developped project management skills. Therefore he shares with Oliver the prototypes developpement responsability.

Florian Heslouin, Aboard emnbedded electronics and collaborative work.

Looking for new ways to work together, Florian is a self-taught person. Having developped the Wiki-nautsime, he reminds us that technical solutions are only interesting if they're shared! When we met him, he was developping open-source embedded electronics, project he decided to share with us!

And also Mathieu Duchesne, Yann Chauvin, Inès Torlay, Cassandre Hélias, Alix Ladam, Audrey Bedel, Samuel Napoléoni, Théo Hélias, Adrien Guilbaud, Agathe Gravier, and all i forget! Whether they just give us a hand on a precise subject, or spend their week-ends repairing the boat, they are the force of our adventure! They remind us that our adventure is collaborative et that each one opinion is important!

Allocation of funds

This fundraising will allow us to transform our 46 years old sailing ship into an itinerant prototyping laboratory! A subvention from the french region Pays de la Loire has provided the ressources to develop our prototypes. After investing all our savings to buy the boat (10000€) and its first basic equipements (3000€), we ask the sailors and makers community to help us fulfill our objectives! It's thanks to your support that we will be able to set the sails:

In "Survival" mode: the Lab-REV team come back alive from the adventure (4000€)

- Hull refreshing (1000€): built in 1968, Kaukera's hull need a few repair to make a fresh start!

- Mast revision (1200€): in order to set all Karukera's sails, the mast's cables need to be changed.

- Survival equipment: a life raft (1000€), an emergency beacon (250€), and a VHF radio (350€) will allow us to get rescued in case of emergency.

- Medicines (100€): To come back in good health!

- Fire extinguishers (100€): because fire burns, and boats sink!

In "Safe" mode: we can dedicate ourselves to experimentations (5000€)

- Valves, through hull inlets, watertightness (600€): because a boat taking water can't be called a lab.

- Electric installation (400€): the right fuses to avoid short-circuiting the project!

In "autonomous" mode: we can finally breathe, the lab is eco-friendly (7000€)

- biofuel tasting engine (800€): No need for gasoline for our old engine: a few mechanical modifications, et we give a second life to your fries, recycling the frying oil into biofuel!

- Manual water maker (800€): transforms seawater into drinkable water!

- electric stove (100€): eating without polluting!

- fishing gear (200€): to make rice tastier!

- Micro greenhouse and seed tray (100€): seeds to flavour our recipes!

In "Comfort" mode: we can sleep on both ears (8000€)

- New mattresses (500€): Because our current matresses have already lasted a few thousand miles + a few indoor modifications!

- Asymetrical spinnaker (500€): to always have the appropriate sail!

Every supplement will allow us to build more efficient prototypes, and to buy new gears for the lab!
