Hello, my name is Hanne Van Assche and I am a Belgian photographer. I am going to publish my very first photobook with Stockmans Art Books. I am launching this crowdfunding campaign in order to raise the necessary money to finance the production of the Удачный / Lucky book. The story Yakutia is Russia’s treasury. According to a Siberian legend, God scattered a bag full of treasures over this vast area. Under the layer of permafrost there are enormous reserves of coal, gas, gold and diamonds. I spent several months in the mining town of Udachny, on the edge of a gigantic diamond mine. Soviet geologists discovered Yakutia’s first rough diamond in 1949. The reserves were so great that the site was promptly named “Udachny”, which means “happy” or “successful” in English. The Soviet Union exported these diamonds to all corners of the world, all the way to Antwerp. In the 1950s, more and more workers from Russia and other Soviet states moved to the mine. The settlement quickly expanded into a full-fledged city, thousands of miles from civilization in a far-flung corner of Eastern Russia. Udachny became a monotown: a city whose existence rests entirely on a gigantic diamond crater. Today the mining town has about 12,000 inhabitants. Hanne zooms in on them: the faces behind the precious diamond. In Udachny / Lucky the viewer is introduced to proud citizens and contrasting landscapes. This project shows how the hospitality of this colorful community softens the harsh climate of a frozen and isolated world. But what if the mine is exhausted? Russian diamond giant Alrosa, which manages the mine, expects Udachny to remain in operation for at least another 25 years. After that, seasonal workers are likely to leave first. And those who grew up there? I discovered that they have more reasons to stay than just diamonds. For them Udachny will always remain a home, their piece of the world in the world. Het verhaal Jakoetië is de schatkamer van Rusland. Volgens een Siberische legende strooide God een zak vol schatten over dit uitgestrekte gebied. Onder de laag permafrost schuilen enorme reserves van kolen, gas, goud en diamant. Ik trok voor een viertal maanden naar het mijnstadje Udachny, aan de rand van een gigantische diamantmijn. Sovjetgeologen ontdekten de eerste ruwe diamant van Jakoetië in 1949. De reserves bleken zo groot dat de vindplaats prompt de naam ‘Udachny’ kreeg, wat in het Nederlands ‘geluk’ of ‘succesvol’ betekent. De Sovjet-Unie exporteerde deze diamanten naar alle uithoeken van de wereld, helemaal tot in Antwerpen. In de jaren 1950 trokken steeds meer arbeiders vanuit Rusland en andere Sovjetstaten naar de mijn. De nederzetting breidde snel uit tot een volwaardige stad, op duizenden kilometers van de bewoonde wereld in een verre uithoek van Oost-Rusland. Udachny werd een monotown: een stad wiens bestaan volledig steunt op een gigantische diamantkrater. Vandaag telt de mijnstad zo’n 12.000 inwoners. Op hen zoom ik in: de gezichten achter de kostbare diamant. In Udachny/Lucky maakt de toeschouwer kennis met trotse burgers en contrasterende landschappen. De documentaire laat zien hoe de gastvrijheid van deze kleurrijke gemeenschap het barre klimaat van een bevroren en geïsoleerde wereld verzacht. Maar wat als de mijn ooit uitgeput geraakt? Russische diamantgigant Alrosa, die de mijn beheert, verwacht dat Udachny nog minstens 25 jaar operationeel blijft. Daarna zullen seizoensarbeiders er waarschijnlijk als eerste vertrekken. En zij die er opgroeiden? Ik ontdekte dat zij meer redenen hebben om te blijven dan enkel de diamant. Voor hen zal Udachny steevast een thuis blijven, hun stukje wereld op de wereld.
