This is the music of today! The one we want to film.

A certain curiosity was the starting point of this project. We wanted to rediscover music in a different way. And above all, we wanted to share with others our meetings with the musicians and their stories. So this is not just our musical trip, and not merely that of the artists, but it is especially for all music lovers who, like us, want to discover music in a different way. By following the web trip that we are creating, each participant can plan his personal music trip as he wishes, and then he can take part in the development of the ever-evolving playlist.

27 musical meetings in 9 symbolic places along a musical DNA

9 trips on the American highway between New York and San Francisco, tuned into MOTR.fm. The radio host, Leroy Downs from LA, takes us from city to city through discussions with musicologists, sociologists, historians or the musicians themselves born and raised in, and symbols of their cities.

An interactive and musical platform

The MOTR community is a participative playlist in the form of an ever-changing musical map. It begins with the musicians on the web documentary MOTR and then becomes infinite as other musicians and other music lovers add to the list. At a later date, the unexplored towns on the web trip (Seattle, Miami, Denver, Nashville, Baltimore) can also be filmed, along with the artists that make these towns famous.

Although the project was the idea of two directors with the same ambition, the team has grown rapidly and now includes twelve people, all sharing a similar passion for music. The MOTR community includes artists, musicians, partners who, like us, want to discuss and share the music. Today we want to reach out to the greatest number of people possible. By using crowdfunding, we can tell you all about the project and you can become involved in its production.

The filming is planned for spring 2015. We are currently developing partnerships and a financial plan to meet our objectives. The success of this crowdfunding campaign will enable us to prepare the production, to research locations and to develop the beta version of the MOTR site. But above all, together we will build a community which will continue to grow in the United States. Eventually, this community could expand beyond the American territory and travel to other places in the world where a musical genre was born.

The history of MOTR began one summer on a night train somewhere between Belgrade and Istanbul, where it was difficult to find a common language amongst the passengers. We managed to exchange stories about our trips and our passions and realized that, despite our differences, they were very similar: The desire to share a common dream. The same routes fill our imagination and create our modern legend: the highways crossing the States from New York to San Francisco.

Kerouak, Steinbeck, Jack London inspired us to tell a story. Paris Texas, John Ford or Spielberg's Duel inspired us to tell it in the cinema. But which stories of the USA remain to be told? Which pictures can still be filmed?

American music is everywhere: the vibes of Tom Waits, the Wu-Tang Clan and Herbie Hancock travel with us through our earphones. In the clubs we frequent, everyone is singing with Green Day or Kanye West... The whole world is dancing to the beat of the music born in this fascinating country. But behind the monuments of our modern culture, behind the majors and the invasion of mainstream, lies the story of music, told by men and women who at certain times and in certain places have marked the history of the USA. Born out of pain or anger, transported by hope or love, Blues, Techno or Psychedelic Rock always tell the story of their people, at times united, at times torn apart, but always reunited thanks to their music.

We are returning to these symbolic places to hear what today's musicians are expressing through their musical genres, which are part and parcel of their cities' heritage. Today's Hip Hop doesn't send out the same message about the districts in New York as it did in the 90's. Despite promises and progress, Blues in New Orleans bears new wounds and Rock'n'Roll adopted by the Hispanic, Portorican and Asian communities reveal a changing society. These are some of the stories that American music has to offer.

We will give a face and a voice to this music. We will let the artists guide us through their towns, these artists who have so much to tell us but who are not as yet known by the wider public.

We will not make this exploratory journey alone. These stories are told for all ears, and each one of us can create our personal music trip. You too can continue to explore this huge cultural landscape. We have started the journey and we provide you with the means to pursue it.

Benoit and Yoann

Writers and directors of MOTR

Allocation of funds

What the funds will be used for

We have been working on this project for the past 18 months. Last January we self-financed an initial trip to the USA to research locations (approx. €4000) which enabled us to produce this trailer. The money raised by crowdfunding will allow us to acquire the equipment necessary for high-quality audio and video recording for the "portrait" documentaries and to develop the MOTR website.
