Operation 15+15+15

Since 2012 DoucheFLUX has been striving to improve the lot of the most underprivileged in our society — the homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless, whatever their administrative status, and wherever they are from — by organising activities (40 editions of the radio program DoucheFLUX On Air, 29 DoucheFLUX Film-Debates, 15 editions of DoucheFLUX Magazine, 6 gatherings around DoucheFLUX Meets Schools, the development of DoucheFLUX Serious Game) and helping them gain access to essential services.

DoucheFLUX seeks to restore their energy, dignity and self-esteem, all things they need to escape homelessness. Or avoid becoming homeless (again).

DoucheFLUX is a participatory social project which has so far relied entirely on private funding. We aim to achieve a balanced budget based on solidarity. By the end of 2018 we plan to cover our operating costs through three almost equal revenue streams: affordable charges for the services we provide; government subsidies; and receipts from fundraising campaigns and sponsorship agreements. Towards the end of 2016 DoucheFLUX will reach a major milestone in its programme of socially innovative measures with the opening of its new 650 m2 building in Anderlecht, near Brussels South station. After a year of renovation works, 20 showers, a laundry room, 450 lockers, an information desk and computers will be made available to the most underprivileged in a stimulating and convivial setting, encouraging friendly discussions and mutual respect.

Profile picture of the new building of DoucheFLUX located at 84 rue des Vétérinaires, in 1070 Brussels.

The team of DoucheFLUX On Air during the recording of "Zéro sans-abri" (zero homelessness). The occasion as well to celebrate the anniversary of one of the participants.

Allocation of funds

Operation 15+15+15

From 15 April to 29 May we are seeking to raise €15,000 to buy 15 devices (8 computers, 3 information display screens, a printer, a projector screen, speakers and a server). This equipment will enable us to provide an efficient service to the underprivileged people who use our services, using high-tech infrastructure to automate all of our management procedures, and allowing us to focus on welcoming them as people.

Computers are essential for all kinds of administrative procedures, so four will be reserved for our users, enabling them to find their way through the administrative maze which often confronts those in a vulnerable situation. An information desk, developed in cooperation with partners in the field, will provide up-to-date, centralised information about the various services available in Brussels.

Patrice Rousseau and Maurice Cornet applauding the initiatives of DoucheFLUX in view of their own experiences with homelessness. Picture taken at the press conference in November 2015 at the start of the renovation works in the new building of DoucheFLUX. © Cyrus Pâques

Should this crowdfunding generate more than €15.000, surplus funds will be used for sponsoring X showers taken by underprivileged persons who can't afford paying the actual cost price. In the new building, homeless people will be charged €1 per shower. To the organisation it will, however, cost €5,66 to provide a shower to one person. We therefore call on the general public to help cover the difference of €4,66 per shower. According to this reasoning, a donation of 45€ will allow 10 homeless people to take a shower and, at the same time, it will help DoucheFLUX manage its operating budget. Fully operational, the sanitary infrastructure of DoucheFLUX allows 50.000 showers on a yearly basis.

Co-written by underprivileged people, DoucheFLUX Magazine (current circulation of 4000) is sold in the Brussels' streets mainly by people who live under precarious conditions themselves. Purchased at 0,25€ they sell the magazine at 2€ according to a perfectly legal system. For many vendors, receipts from DoucheFLUX Magazine represent an important part of their total income. © Cyrus Pâques
