Oscar and Rosalind: The rainbow

The project

They are only four years old and already so curious. They have many questions and we adults don't have all the answers. Don't worry, this is normal! The age of endless questioning can be unsettling. This is why we have started the collection "Oscar & Rosalind".

Our books tell a story and a bit more, to quench the thirst for knowledge of the young children ages 4 to 6. After reading the book, you will be able to visit the web page of Oscar & Rosalind where you will find instructions to do the experiment, at home or at school.

We published the book in French already, with a successful Kiss Kiss Bank Bank campaign, and can't wait to share it with English and Dutch speaking readers. We aim at printing the book in time for the festival "I Love Science" 2019 that takes place in Brussels at the end of April and where we will present our work. We will send the books in may.

The characters

Oscar is a little hedgehog who's always up for an adventure! Be careful when he is sad: he rolls up and pricks.

Rosalind, the giraffe, is the scientific friend of Oscar. She welcomes gladly all inquiring minds in her lab and answers their questions.

We chose the name Rosalind as a tribute to Rosalind Franklin, a scientist who played a key role in discovering the structure of DNA. By this choice, we wish to put forward a female scientist whose contributions were not duly recognized.

The actors of the project

Sophie - author and illustrator of the book

Sophie, alias Sopi, is a French teacher and illustrates kids' books. She has a degree in Roman language and literature, and a specialized master in teaching French as a foreign language. She started her career in high schools; then, she taught in continuing education. Sophie now teaches at a school for hospitalized children in Brussels. For 13 years, she has applied her pedagogical and creative skills to support suffering teenagers. As a result of her marriage with Pierre, who is a physicist, and the birth of two curious girls, she felt the motivation for illustrating a book for the popularization of science. Sophie wrote and drew "Oscar and Rosalind".

Pierre - scientific advisor

Pierre is a physicist. He is driven by science and likes to communicate his knowledge and enthusiasm. As a researcher, Pierre supervised many exercises and laboratory sessions. He is not afraid to get out of his office to lead tours at the museum or to perform physics demonstrations. In the collection "Oscar and Rosalind", Pierre oversaw the scientific texts and schematics.

Allocation of funds

We will use the collected funds to print copies of the book. The project is

  • 1000€ printing
  • 100€ communication and sending costs
  • 100€ project and transaction fees for the platform Kiss Kiss Bank Bank.

If we exceed this objective, we will use to money in priority to print more books, then to support the start of the next adventure of Oscar & Rosalind.
