As a reminder, these are the features we're talking about :

Video redundancy, between PeerTube instances, mean that PeerTube hosters with powerful servers and great bandwidth could choose to help smaller PeerTube instances, and make the Fediverse more united and resilient.

Subscriptions throughout the Fediverse would be a great feature for video watchers: they could subscribe to whatever they want, regardless of the Fediverse setting of the instance where they made their account: it'll empower users' freedom.

A mascot for PeerTube

Last week, David Revoy suggested to choose and draw a mascot for PeerTube ! He started by calling on everyone to choose an animal which will represent the software :  will it be a dog, a unicorn, a butterfly ?

After many contributions on Mastodon and Twitter, 3 cute little critters - the swallow, the owl and the octopus - were chosen and battled their way to first place.

Apparently, many people supported the lil' octopus and David Revoy seems to have taken into account the main critic against it.

In the developer's own words

Last thursday, Chocobozzz, the PeerTube's developer, wrote two articles about his software on medium, here and here. The first one tells the story about the genesis of PeerTube : what are the purpose of the technologies used ! The second article is an answer to those who ask "Why should I feel concerned about PeerTube?". With this software, our aspiration is really to free everyone, from the sysadmin to the user !

It's been a wild week, y'all went crazy and you made it happen: PeerTube v1 is financed, and we plan to release it next October.

We are deeply humbled and thankful for all the trust, the sharing, and the kind words you showed us during this crowdfunding... that is far from being done!

Indeed, we still have some days left to aim for a better PeerTube... to shape it's future beyond our wildest dreams!

Let's give PeerTube's v1 some killer features!

Hello all!

We... we just don't know what to say! The last few days, we've seen an incredible amount of pledges, nice comments and sharing about #PeerTube.

We went from 40 to 60% of our goal in less than two days! Y'all really are amazing. On the other hand, Google is more "fascinating" than "amazing", and in a... very curious way.

Google didn't "do the right thing"

We've always known that Google is the best advocate against YouTube, and oops: they did again. From what we gathered, several YouTube channels have seen their videos deactivated because their owners forgot to agree the new terms and conditions, updated for the launch of YouTube Music.

That proves, once more, how much we rely on their services and how dependent we have become.

The silver lining is, some FreeSoftware developers such as the Blender Foundation took this as an opportunity to try and install their own PeerTube instance, thus shading some light on our software.

To the Blender Foundation: thank you, really, both for your amazing work on the Blender free software, and for trying and talking about the one we are developing.

To anyone reading this : take some time to watch videos on their PeerTube instance, all those 3D animated movies has been made on the Blender free-libre software, and they are amazing.

PeerTube's destiny lies in your hands

With such a dramatic increase in the pledges, you give us hope. Not only do we hope to achieve the 20 000 € goal, but now we also hope we could go and reach those stretch goals.

It's all in your hands, now.

As a small French non profit, we know how to talk with the french-speaking, free-software-loving community. But it is very hard for us to make PeerTube known outside our borders.

Why choose a soft launch strategy for a crowdfunding campaign?

Because we want to hack the way crowdfunding works! We wanted a tool to make PeerTube known outside of our french-speaking bubble, a tool that anyone can grab to contribute to its success.
