Publication du CD "Ad perpetuam JSB Memoriam"

To produce a CD of music of an essentially spiritual nature for this highly original form of the viola and organ duo, Karsten Dobers and Loïc Mallié had been thinking about it for a long time. The Hortus label, known for the originality and artistic quality of its choices, is ready to release this CD in France and abroad. But there is a shortfall of € 4,300 to cover the costs of the graphics and the physical manufacture of the viola and organ CD. Today, with your help, we can get a great record out! If we allow ourselves to send you this message, it is because, beyond this recording for which we need your help, there is an ardent need that we urgently feel: - defend a demanding conception of the repertoire, far from ease and cultural demagoguery - Publicize the viola, a magical instrument and too often ignored - mirror Bach's work with pieces from our time, including three premieres that concern living composers (Edith Canat de Chizy, Gorka Cuesta, Loïc Mallié) - Explore the possibilities of associations of timbres and playing modes of the viola and organ, totally original chamber formation, even unprecedented Listen to an excerpt from the future CD Ad Perpetuam JSB Memoriam: part of Hindemith "Trauermusik" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ2juFklgQs Watch a recording session for the Choral deJ.S. " https://youtu.be/NUlOrr-NSmo Ad perpetuam JSB Memoriam The programme presented herewith by Karsten Dobers and Loïc Mallié is first and foremost inspired by the need they both sensed to provide an opportunity for hearing musical works of essentially spiritual character. It all goes back to their collaboration on the occasion of the recording of the album Altissimo! – their version for viola and organ of Harold in Italy by Berlioz (Hortus 141). The enthusiasm of listeners’ reactions spurred them to follow up on the experiment of this highly original form of the viola and organ duo. It was through making a viola and organ reduction of the magnificent Trauermusik by Paul Hindemith, who in the last section quotes the chorale 'Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit' by J.S. Bach, that the idea occurred to them to take this work as a model, so to speak, in order to bring face to face early chorales elaborated upon by J.S. Bach and original works composed on the basis of those chorales (music, literary text or both at once). Two such works already existed, one of them – by Hindemith – just mentioned, and the other for solo viola by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, 'Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ.' Zimmermann (1918-1970) composed this piece in 1955, to a great extent with a serial thrust, incorporating the theme of the chorale ('Praised be thou, Jesus Christ'). As the composer tells us, his heartfelt desire was to express as well as possible "everything man’s heart conveys", far removed, however, from any sort of mawkishness, rather, quite the contrary, in a highly spiritual musical gesture. Zimmermann was clear about this piece having been written in the spirit of a chorale prélude. Then, three further works were commissioned from living composers, thanks to support from Johan Luijmès, artistic leader of Orgelpark. Édith Canat de Chizy: “J’ai vu le ciel ouvert” for viola and organ "The theme of vision has pervaded the latest works by Edith Canat de Chizy: Visio on texts by Hildegard of Bingen, Paradiso after Dante’s poem, and Apocalypsis on the theme of the Apocalypse whence the title (Revelation 19:11). This of course enters into resonance with the chorale’s title incipit 'Herr Gott, nun schleuss den Himmel auf.' Here the organ and viola are inimately intertwoven within the various aspects of this vision, be it through the interplay of harmonics and of flutes, or in the sonic power generated by the two instruments. Four sequences structure this piece: prayer, ascension, vision, the white horse and the sword of iron…" Gorka Guesta: "Mors et vita" for viola and organ " Conceived with the textual premise of the chorale 'Christ lag in Todesbanden' in mind, the piece forms a diptych in which death and life vie with each other. Unity between the two protagonists is obtained thanks to the use of similar writing techniques such as ostinati, an ascending and falling melodic cell in a major seventh that runs through the two parts, and finally the Calmo passage exposed twice: at the end of Death and prior to the final Alleluia. This passage is the representation of Christ and is made up of three phrases that symbolize the Trinity. The harmonic coagulation of the three phrases yields". Loïc Mallié: “Alors les yeux s’ouvrirent” for viola and organ " This piece, inspired by the Gospel passage known as ‘The pilgrims/ voyagers of Emmaus’, attempts to translate into music the mysterious paths, within the pilgrims’hearts, of Christ’s appearance, risen from the dead and unrecognizable to their eyes, as they eventually recognize him at the breaking of the bread. There is no descriptive or narrative intention at all, and even less so a chronological one. The composer merely had in mind different ‘qualities’ of sensation: obscurity and mystery at the beginning and the very end, and in the entire central passage, revolving around the first three periods, scintillas of light, explosion of joy, bewilderment… The fourth period, which in the Bach chorale is nothing but the unadorned reiteration of the second, is not developed explicitly but replaced by a polyphonic elaboration, shared by the two instruments, which seems apt to ‘go every which way’, as only the sensation of riveting feeling can, upon coming face to face with the revelation of the Risen One." The choice of carrying out this recording at Orgelpark in Amsterdam is largely due to the exceptional confluence of four elements. First of all, the quality and diversity of the instruments at hand in this unique venue. Then, the highly favourable conditions afforded by the Direction of Orgelpark in making available the premises, which is not to overlook the organisation, in the same space, of a concert at the close of the recording sessions, a concert that will have precisely the goal of presenting the disc. A final element – and by no means the least – is the commission by Johan Luijmes, Artistic Director of Orgelpark, for three viola and organ works. Presentation of the musicians Karsten Dobers, viola The musical training of Karsten Dobers (born in Hanover in 1964) was deeply influenced by prominent chamber players. He studied with Franz Beyer at the Musikhochschule of Munich, Siegfried Führlinger and the members of the Alban Berg Quartet at the University for Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna; he also received valuable advice from Serge Collot, Sandor Vegh and Thomas Riebl. During his eight-year stay in Vienna, Karsten Dobers was a member of the Chamber Ensemble at the Volksoper (1991-1994), and of the Alt-Wien Quartet (1990-1994) specializing in the Viennese tradition and repertory, performing numerous concerts in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, recorded by the Austrian Radio/Television network (ORF). The orchestral career of Karsten Dobers began in Munich under the direction of Leonard Bernstein and Sergiu Celibidache, with participation in international tours and numerous recordings with the Radio Orchestra of the Bayerischer Rundfunk. In 1990 he joined the Symphony Orchestra of the Vienna Radio. From 1994 to 1997 he was solo violist of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra (San Sebastian, Spain), frequently being invited as a solo violist with various symphony orchestras in France, Belgium and Spain. An passionate advocate of the string quartet, Karsten Dobers is a founding member in 2003 of the Novalis Quartet of Munich, with which he has given numerous concerts throughout Europe, recorded by the German, Austrian and Spanish radio and television broadcasting companies. In 2009 he founded the Isasi Quartet and undertook recording the works for quartet by the composer for whom the ensemble is named, Andrés Isasi (1890-1940). The latter’s complete string quartets in a world premiere recording on the Naxos International label garnered international and unanimous acclaim by critics, and volumes were selected as ‘one of the 10 best records of the month’ by the music magazine RITMO (Spain). The major radio stations in Europe and beyond regularly broadcast it. The Basque/Spanish television channel EITB has since 2017 broadcast a documentary on the composer Andrés Isasi and the remarkable task accomplished by Karsten Dobers in retrieving and reconstructing his work. With the Isasi Quartet Karsten Dobers has devoted himself to recording the works for quartet by Henri Marteau (1874-1934), outstanding violinist and a surprising composer, bringing together an eminently French eloquence and the rigorousness of a composer of German extraction on his mother’s side, in three records for the CPO label in collaboration with the Bavarian Radio in Munich and the mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes (Victoires de la musique). The first and second volumes issued in 2018 and 2020 were awarded among others a maximum score of 5 by Diapason and the highest rating by the authoritative German magazine Fono Forum. Karsten Dobers forms an original duo with the organist Loïc Mallié, with whom he has given numerous concerts in France, Spain, the Netherlands… and recorded Harold in Italy by Hector Berlioz in the unpublished version for viola and organ for the Hortus label. Released in 2017, the record received a rating of 5 diapasons. Karsten Dobers’ experience in the area of contemporary music is rich and varied, via the Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt, the Vienna Klangforum, the Symphony Orchestra of the Vienna Radio, the Novalis and Isasi Quartets, working in close collaboration with eminent composers such as Witold Lutoslawski, Elliot Carter, György Ligeti, Hans Werner Henze, Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, Heinz Holliger, recording some ten contemporary string quartets for the Bavarian Radio in Munich. His performing career has led him to be featured in prestigious festivals in Salzburg, Vienna, Bregenz, at the Carinthischer Sommer, playing alongside partners such as Roland Daugareil, Philippe Graffin, Pavel Vernikov, Jérôme Pernoo, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Yvan Chiffoleau, Alain Meunier, Xavier Gagnepain, Sung-Won Yang, Enrico Pace and with ensembles such as the Quatuor Ebène and the Quatuor Danel. His concerts are recorded by the radio/television services in Germany (BR, HR), Austria (ORF), Spain (RNE, EITB), Korea (KBS), Belgium (VRT). A passionate and committed pedagogue, Karsten Dobers since 2002 has been professor of viola and chamber music at the High Conservatory Musikene (San Sebastian, Spain). He is regularly invited to give master classes in Vienna, Graz, London, Lübeck, Weimar, Milwaukee, Maastricht, Havana, Nanjing, Tallinn, Louvain, Biarritz, Bordeaux, Lille, Casalmaggiore, Toledo... Loïc Mallié, composition & organ Born in La Baule (France), 1947. He studied with Catherine Ortmans and Pierre Froment at Rennes Conservatoire, later at Paris Conservatoire where one of his teachers was none other than Olivier Messiaen. He graduated in harmony, counterpoint, fugue, improvisation and organ. Loïc Mallié is also a law graduate. He has won several major international improvisation competitions: Lyon (1977 & 1979, respectively piano and organ) and Chartres (1982). He teaches composition and improvisation at Lyon Conservatoire Supérieur and at Musikene (Higher school of music of the Basque Country) in San-Sebastian (Spain). Before being appointed organist at Saint Pothin Church (Lyon) in 1989, he shared the organ chair at Saint Pierre de Neuilly with Jean-Claude Henry for 15 years. Loïc Mallié gives master-classes and concerts, and sits on the jury in various international competitions (Germany, Spain, Iceland, Poland, Sweden, Italy, England, Canada, Norway…). His compositions for organ, piano, orchestra, choir, as well as chamber music, are published at Éditions Lemoine, Billaudot, Notissimo, Fuzeau and Rubin. He has recorded works by 20th century composers (Casterede, Claustre) as well as improvisations (RFM, Verany and Hortus labels).
