Quintet - a new composition
Support a 14 year old cellist and composer to create a new piece - a string quintet.
Quintet - a new composition
To start with...
This project is already very successful - five days after it was launched, it reached 100 percent! I am extremely grateful for this: a huge THANK YOU to all the generous backers!
However - every support and donation is still very welcome! Below you will find an explanation why (in short: the budget was made very tight), so you are very warmly invited to continue reading my story - and if you like it, to participate in it!
Hello, my name is Thomas Prechal, I am 14 years old and 'quite addicted' to playing the cello... Next to that, I love to improvise music on the piano and to compose new pieces of classical music. I don't like to put music 'in stylistic boxes', so I cannot give a label to the style of my music - but I am fond of melodies and beautiful harmonies, my music is very melodic and above all: I want the people for whom I write - the listeners - to be able to enjoy my music, also when they don't know a lot about classical music!
Since I was 12 years old, I have been in the lucky circumstances to be able to perform my pieces regularly, in the Netherlands (where I live) and in the Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium and France. On these occasions, it was heartwarming and encouraging to receive the positive responses of the public. It is a great feeling to be able to contribute and create something that can be shared and enjoyed by many people, that can convey a story and touch people. By doing so, I hope to help to carry on the beautiful 'classical music flame'.
Performances in Paris
On January 10, 11 and 12, 2019, I performed my own compositions 'Little Fantasy' and 'Duette' in the Salle Cortot in Paris, together with the fantastic musicians Bo-Geun Park, cello and Karine Sélo, piano, in the series 'Freshly Composed'. Part of this concert series is my present Kisskissbankbank project 'Quintet' - because if this crowdfunding project will be successful, I will be invited to perform the string quintet in Paris in Salle Cortot in the next season. The new piece that I have in mind (and started to write down...) is a string quintet, for 2 violins, viola and 2 cellos. A beautiful combination of voices. To give a little 'sneak-peak' - there will be some Moravian influences in the music (I am half Czech and a big admirer of Moravian folk music...).
In the further future, I have dreams about writing a cello concerto (for cello and symphony orchestra), pieces for the combination cello and harpe (because it is such a beautiful combination) or cello and horn. And my absolute dream: to write an opera sometime...
If you want to hear me perform my music (and other pieces) you are welcome to visit my youtube channel on: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_FYy_elzWyzWCDzJCAX0ww
Allocation of funds
The project and its finances
I write my compositions with a pencil on paper at the piano. Only after that I 'type' the score in into my computer, using the Sibelius music notation programm. After that, I print my scores myself at the local copyshop (as I don't have a 'publisher' yet, naturally!). These printing costs are the first part of my needed budget, they are estimated at 50 euro.
This specific piece, I would like to première for my grandmother and her friends in the beautiful hall of the Bartholomeus Gasthuis in Utrecht. My 'babi' (as she is called in the Czech language) and her friends are always a very receptive, lovely audience - they are in different stages of Alzheimer and I sometimes have the feeling that music is speaking to them in an even stronger way than it does to the standard audience in a concerthall. This première, I intend to play together with professional musicians, so that after this concert, we will be ready to record the piece as well. The fee for my fellow musicians is the second part of my budget: 150 euro per player (rehearsals and concert together), accounting for 600 euro (I myself 'get paid' by the fact that I can offer my grandmother this present).
After this première, we would embark on a recording session. The costs for this recording session will be 300 euro. It will involve sound editing, so that I can share the recording and video later on different platforms.
Provision for Kisskissbankbank
If this campaign will be succesful, there will be costs deducted for Kisskissbankbank and that is where the last 50 euros will go.
What if I achieve more than my financial goal?
By now, the project has turned out to be rather succesfull already! I am very grateful to see that 170 procent is already reached. However - support for this project is still very welcome.
How does the project take shape with extra support above the 100 percent?
The budget was made rather tight. Different steps that can be achieved now that the original budget is surpassed, are these:
- Printing my compositions is rather expensive, so I would use money for extra printing costs.
- Above all: for this project, I would love to pay my fellow musicians more properly than in this original calculated minimum budget (which was very much a minimum budget), so extra money would go into that.
- A very attractive next step: as we can embark on the recording session now that we have reached the initial goal, we will have a moment where all is present for a good recording: location, musicians, recording engineer.... with extra budget it will be possible to profit from this occasion better and record next to the new piece 'Quintet' two or three already existing pieces as well (think of for example the string quartet, a piano quintet I just finished, the cello duets)! Extra money is needed for this as it would ask for extra rehearsal and recording time. It would be something I can happily dream of... make a collection of recordings of several of my pieces together. Think in the direction of a CD with these works...
- And finally - my ultimate dream is to once find 'an editor', meaning a person or company that will help me succeed in having my compositions printed by a 'proper music edition'.... so that my music can be performed by whoever wishes to do so... and heard and hopefully enjoyed by always more people... Musicians nowadays perform more and more from digital scores, using a device in rehearsals and on stage, but next to that I still I believe in the value of 'physical paper music scores', preferably edited in an attractive way!
And if you join in.... a huge THANK YOU.
I would be immensely grateful, if you would help me making this project happen by donating! Thank you for your time!
