Roots
Roots, the first and only organic, local and 100% circular farm shop in Brussels!
Successful
Yes, the lion’s share of our goods are certified organic. It’s a way of producing that we truly believe in. The best farms we’ve seen are certified organic. Having said that, there will be a few exceptions: some of our producers are converting to organic (the entire process lasts 3 years) and there will also be a few non-organic goods that tickled our fancy. Everything will be carefully labelled so you’ll know what’s what.
If only our beloved Belgium could produce everything we needed in day-to-day life. Alas no. Everything that can be grown in Belgium will be sourced from Belgium! No Argentinian apples or Italian carrots to be seen. However, some of life’s essentials, such as olive oil or rice, cannot be produced in Belgium. We’ll get them from as close as possible, generally from around the Mediterranean.
For us ‘Roots’ speaks volumes. We want to be in direct contact with our producers, to get back to the roots of what we eat, with no middlemen at all. We chose an English name because Brussels is the capital of Europe and English is a commonly spoken language in our neighbourhood around Schuman. Our slogans are in French 'Mangez frais, mangez près' and Dutch 'Eet vers en niet ver'.
No. We’ll sell as much as we can in bulk and we’ll encourage you to reuse and recycle your containers too. But we do also have to respect Belgium’s health and safety norms. Some dairy products (cheese, butter) need to be packaged. The same is true for vacuum packed meat. We’ve participated in brainstorming workshops to be as zero waste as possible.
We took the ‘O’s from ROOTS and used them to express our 2 key values. The first ‘O’ is a radish. This vegetable is pretty easy to grow, even for absolute beginners. It means a lot to us - we’re also on a learning curve and our adventure will be a success come what may. The second ‘O’ is a closed circle. It represents a new economic model called ‘the circular economy’. The aim is to follow a healthy lifestyle, for us and the environment, by reducing waste.
We’re completely different!
- We are the direct link between you and the producers = usually, there are loads of middlemen, which means that there’s no relationship of trust between the producer and the consumer and no fair price for either.
- We open up the world of zero waste to you = less packaging means throwing out less plastic and spending less.
- We help you ‘recycle’ (compost) your organic waste = our aim is to give it all back to Mother Earth and help produce rich soil all over again!
- We encourage you to be savvy shoppers - if you fancy developing your own ideas or doing something yourself, MakeSense and Roots ASBL will organise brainstorming workshops to turn those ideas into reality!
