Transition Ride -- Pedalling into transition.

Our project

Our German-French family with three children are going to live a special transition towards a new life.

It has been a couple of years now that we try to have a very little ecological impact but this year we are taking a step further trough two adventures. The first one: starting end of March, we are going to cycle along river Rhine, lake Constance, before cycling in the Doubs and Saône valleys. Finally, we will reach our destination in the Beaujolais Vert region in France where the second adventure will wait for us. Throughout the way, we would like to meet people via warmshowers, friends, friends' friends, help on farms while WWOOFing or check out cohousing projects and discuss about how they live.

Follow our adventure on our blog Transition Ride!

What the bicycles means to us

Pascal (March 1983): “I want to spread my love for the bicycle, the most efficient way of transport, in another way than just by wearing my t-shirts and preaching to friends. I have been looking forward for such a trip for a very long time now. Now, get on your bike, be an example for others and cycle through the world (or whatever lies under my tyres...).”

Katia (January 1981): “For a long time, riding a bicycle was Let's go for a short 30km ride which finally turned out to be 45km in the mountains. Or 90km in three stages which then was 90km in one day because the camp sites were closed. But what are we not doing for love!!! Wedding on a tandem and soon the removal.”

Leya (May 2011): “I will ride as fast as I can on my new bike with 21 speeds which we have bought for this trip, and I will be even faster than my father!”

Elinor (February 2013): “I now have a shiny blue bicycle with seven speeds and can go very fast!”

Adriel (September 2015): « Mein Laufrad!* When I am big, I want to be a magician on a bike”
* “My balance bike!”

Allocation of funds

We need to be prepared when it comes to equipments, accommodation, food, etc. Along with this, we do not want to spend money in cheap products which will brake within minutes.

Things we want to buy before we leave:

  • clothes, especially technical and waterproofs,
  • general equipment (racks, bags, ...)
  • tents if camping is needed,
  • camping dishes,
  • repair kits and spare tubes,
  • a cargo trailer,
  • WWOOF memberships in France and Germany,
  • eurotopia directory,
  • ...

We estimate the costs for the prior-rides to be >900€.

During our ride, we can definitely need some tailwind when it comes to

  • buying food,
  • buying flour for making sourdough bread during the ride (we will post an article on our blog to show how this is working),
  • accommodation on camp sites,
  • buying train tickets if the legs are tired (promised, we try not to...),
  • and let's be honest, the children would like to have an ice-cream or two from time to time.

Here again, we try to consume as local and organic as possible. We know that this is expensive, we know that it might sound paradoxical, but this is what we believe in, and we strongly believe that this is the right way. The costs are hard to estimate, we will try to limit our expenses. Let's take an example: if on average we need 20€ per day on a trip which is supposed to last 80 days or more, we expect the costs to be 1600€.

We will be very happy to get the chance to live this adventure and get the opportunity to show many beautiful places to our children. Thank you so much for your much appreciated help!
