Yoga and Sport for Refugees
Lesvos Yoga Project is a non profit project aiming to bring yoga and well being to refugees living in different camps in Lesvos.
Sport For Refugees is a French registered NGO organizing sport trainings for refugees in Lesvos.
Lesvos is a beautiful greek island where over 6 000 human beings are stuck. They are refugees, displaced women, men and kids, from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Cameroun, Erythrea an Congo, among others.
They fled war, persecution and conflicts. They survived a difficult journey on land and on the sea. Now, they are living in refugee camps where they face a lot of frustration, uncertainty about the future, unsafety and violence.
We want to bring them relief, we want to empower them by setting up daily goals and activities.
We want to make them feel surrounded by positivity and integrated in their new environnements.
We want to make them feel part of a community.
WHY YOGA AND SPORTS ?
Through developing physical, emotional & mental balance, yoga has proven to be effective in helping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Alternatively, to seek psychological help refugees have to wait for an appointment for months (with 400 persons in line) while yoga gives instant relief by:
- brightening up their daily life and distracting from negative thoughts,
- developing their self knowledge, positive thinking, mindfulness and self awareness,
- easing stress and helping them find a home within themselves,
- building a community by getting together people from different origins and religions, with locals and people from around the globe;
Sports allows energies to flow: it’s a way to give, to create and to use stamina. Practicing sports such as running, core workouts or martial arts enables refugees to:
- release their frustrations,
- to get away all the bad energy they have in themselves and to build positive ones for the future,
- help them clear their minds,
- become aware of their body and movements.
In our vision YOGA and SPORT are complementary and that is why we want to share this with humans !
Both training the body, the spirit and the mind are good for acquiring dedication and discipline.
Allocation of funds
- holding space for yoga, meditation, core workouts, budokon & dance (as well as for getting together in a warm place);
- inviting volunteer teachers, coaches, who can share knowledge, teach skills and conduct yoga sessions, sport trainings;
- organizing professional workshops and teacher trainings providing skills for future employment opportunities for refugees.
WHERE THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT:
Buying materials to cover the wooden floor (as linoleum) : around 300€.
We need to fund a proper accommodation for at least 6 months in order for volunteer teachers and workshop leaders to come on the field. We want to dedicate 1800 to 3600 euros to this part of our fundraising. It means that 360€ would be allocated per month for accommodation for a duration of 6 months.
Last but not least, we need the place to be cosy and warm. So, we need heating for the winter months : 3 months (december, january, february), 40 euros per month; so a total cost of 120 euros.
We also need to cover our own expenses as we invest our time and energy in this project: it represents around 800€ for round flights for both of us, 200€ per week for accommodation and 100€ per week for our personal expenses (food and basic needs). Coordinating and growing Sport For Refugees as an NGO is Estelle's full time job right now.
Bonus amazing project (if our target is exceeded): we want to bring a teacher able to teach yoga to refugees for at least a month. We want to give them the opportunity to learn basic skills of yoga that they could use in their future professional life.
February: Corinne, amazing yoga teacher will come in and teach for men, women as well as for kids and adolescents.
March: Our running project will be greeting new trainers and new passionate runners to motivate the group and make it even bigger ! We plan on joining the local trail race in Agiasos for 10 to 22 kilometers !
Natalie is on her way for new great yoga classes to give and to make our space even a better place !
April: as many of our students are asking for it, we are trying to get a professional martial arts trainer to come join and train the guys. So that they will have the possibility to control their body, their movements and emotions in a better way everyday.
May: Katia will be back on track and will be teaching yoga in the wellness space ! She will be organizing then the Thai Massage course with our most motivated students.
The funds will be collected on the bank account of Sport For Refugees.
