Zabou Guérin - Brèves de Bayan - 1st Solo Album

The accordion, the famous suspender piano, the shivering box, the lung motion, the pin box, the heartburn, the devil’s box, the pretentious calculator and so on... so many nicknames for this young instrument (a little less than two centuries old!) that so many people think they know. Already in 1897, the larousse dictionary finished its definition by "The accordion is an instrument of fantasy that doesn't work with any other, and to which one cannot find a really artistic job." In short, yesterday as today, the accordion doesn't have a good press. However, it developed all over the world, making little brothers and cousins. Amoung the most famous, we find the bandoneon, the concertina, the melodica and the famous enemy brothers: the diatonic accordion and the chromatic. But the one that interests me, the one that I fell in love with in a corridor where its notes resounded in the distance, was the latter’s false twin : the bayan. In France, it's more often called the concert accordion. Yes, it's congratulating itself a little! It claims to be able to replace an orchestra on its own, to play pieces written for an organ and I have to admit that it's not doing too bad... You don’t know it? Follow me, I’ll introduce it to you. "Brèves de Bayan" (meaning: short history of Bayan) it's first of all a conference-concert where I tell the history of the bayan through its repertoire as well as my meeting with him. Making an album was an obvious to me. This album will consist mainly of songs composed for bayan solo. It'll be recorded at the end of February 2022 in the studio GUMBO LAB in Neuville-de-poitou by Paul Motteau, mastered by Géry Courty and drawn by Noémie Kukielczynski. Zabou, daughter of a restaurateur mother from Auvergne who used to play the accordion at the end of the service to make customers sing and dance and of a father who only listenned to the accordion musette, I started off rejecting this instrument imposed by my parents. Then, my teacher decided to show me another sides to the instrument. From classical to jazz, via world music, the accordion can do anything! It's an orchestra of its own that can also mix with sounds from other instruments. A new world opened to me, the accordion became a passion! Then, my goal was to get people to discover this instrument, associated for many French people to the one and only musette style. So, I developed my technique through various studies and interships, discovered improvisation, accompaniment, arranging. I met musicians from around the world. I shared my musical passion and discovered the happiness of playing with others. After having accompanied singers, circus people, created bands, played in balls... I decide today to come back to what made me love this instrument: the solo bayan.
