Note:

These last two years were a big turning point in my life. I spent lot of time I, Sicily, and that was a great source of inspiration. I surprised myself in following new melodies that seemed whispered by wind, water and the mountains. Without looking for it, I explored new pathes that fulfilled me with deep joy, following the trail to the San Calogero source, in the hills of Palazzo Adriano, then watching with great fascination the course of water rolling on itself, running through different courses to finish in the basins of the "nacuni di San Calogero".

In getting home, I transcribed the music that seemed also to flow out of a running source, roll on itself and lead me into places that seemed completely new to me, and then resonate as it had always been there, as a deep longing for peace, harmony and hope.
I have found a great coherence in this music, and eventually I felt the urge to record it with a new band:

After numerous projects through the world based on cultural exchange, I am happy to explore again the fun of quintet playing.

The musiciens playing in this group have rapidly found a collective Way to express themselves thourgh this music. This is a collective "storytelling" experience, we speak about wind, water and dust, and about Don Carmelino, the barber of my village.

1. WATERSCHEI.

This tune is dedicated to the famous italian/belgian singer Rocco Granata, a rôle model for our Community. Rocco lived in Waterschei, like my family. It's there that my father emigrated from Sicily to work in the cool mines. Rocco Granata is a great artist, and continues to inspire me by the deepness of his singing, hs total investment and the authenticity of his music. I also think about our community in this little coal miners town, we used to share all joys and pains, and incredible Italian feasts where we were a one and only big family of friends.

2. BIANCA MUNTAGNA,

« bianca muntagna, nivura simenza, cu mi semina sempri penza », « white mountain, blasck seed, the one who plows me always thinks" . A mountain in Sicily is a field to cultivate. This guessing tale pictures a writer from an analphabet pensant. The letters are the black seed, and the sheet of paper is the white moutain. I dedicated this tune to my in-laws, he was an intellectual who spent his life thinking and writing. She was a long and remarquable life span. Their story was written on a white sheet of paper, everyday new. I feel like an analphabet who discovers the story day per day.

3. AMURI E SPIRANZA,

Love and Hope. ‘l’acqua si nni va unni c’è pinnenza, l’amuri unni c’è spiranza » "Water flows with the steep, love goes where there is hope". Here it is hope dancing like a whisper that makes love turn and grow.

4. ACQUA E PINNENZA,

Same proverbe. This compositions avocates the play of the water, taking multiple pathes that make it accelerate or slow down, to alwways end in the same places, rolling on itself.

LES MUSICIENS :

Artan Buleshkaj is a young guitarist from Ghent. I met him in Ghent's Conservatory. I follow him for now many years, and since the beguining I have been moved by his great sensibility, his melodic sense, his comping, and his flawless taste in Matter of sound choice.

I played with bassist Boris Schmidt some years ago for a concert in Thessalonique, along with Myriam Alter and Tuur Florizoone. I immediately loved his rythmic precision, the strength of his play, and the creativity that he displays in every context.

Lionel Beuvens is one of my favorite drummers in Belgium. His playing is at the same time deeply rooted in jazz tradition and open to explore new territories.

Lode Vercampt joined us for the recording of theater music I wrote. I immediately understood that Lode was the missing pièce for this quintet. His way of putting his personal touch with his cello is always perfect and inspired. And he is one of the best cello players I ever heard, with great craft in orchestral sound, filled with humor, creativity and inspiration.
