That is to say : to bring together designers and local production partners from the very start, to discover unexpected, exciting yet affordable possibilities, and to transform these possibilities into great products for daily use.

It all started Summer 2012, when Mélanie created her collection "other craftsmen" (link kisskiss). Instead of working together with craftsmen, she contacted skilled workers (plumbers, tilers, hair-dressers, ...) proposing to collaborate outside their usual domain. Each object formed a mutual exchange, a brief moment where two trades meet, share, and worked parallel towards a shared goal.

The resulting products, however, remained (quasi-)unique pieces, not easy reproduce, nor to sell.

From here, Mélanie started to explore the possibility to push the experiment towards a truly working model, one which respects the same basic logic, all the while integrating a more functional dimension. Realising the difficulties young designers face to create "real" objects, ones which not only exist on paper but get to grow up to fully grown products, she decides the answer is to create a publishing house for objects. And so, the project Ch'ni is born !

Most objects around us come from so far that we've come to forget how simple their production really is.

Today, the development of an object typically takes more than two years. To retrieve its investment, we have to produce it in very large quantities, use cheap materials and ultra-fast production methods. Series of millions of products, all identical, all impersonal.

The approach of Ch'ni aims to shorten this process by working directly with local production partners, using their specific know-how to create simple processes based on the inherent beauty of raw materials.

There's nothing "magic" about manufacturing. Contrary to popular believe, manufacturing is all around us, as countless skilled workers prove every day. We just have to approach them and understand exactly the difference they can bring to our objects!

For Ch'ni, our "added value" isn't a question of colours, textures or materials. Our added value is naturally drawn from the way we work and produce our objects. It's our way of thinking and designing which generates the difference / the little extra in the finished product.

Working on a human scale

Our philosophy does not imply a return to craftsmanship. Instead we explore the sweet spot between craft and serial production; a middle-way more adapted to your needs, your desires and your means.

Ch'ni produces in small and medium sized series and aims for its objects to remain affordable for as many as possible.

We want to use these universes of knowledge, tools, techniques and materials, hidden right under our noses, and revalue them through our objects.

Our production partners are there, and Ch'ni will help them be more visible, more appreciated and help them to continue to exist.
