♦ THE ART CURATORS ♦

Jung Huh, a Korean artist based in Paris, began his art career in 2016 with different types of artistic events and exhibitions: a cycle of performances with his car (Drive me somewhere), a week of playful artistic performances in the hallway of his art school (Playground), and the first edition of “Plastic love”, while he was a student.

Pauline Creuzé is a French artist who lives near Paris. Her enthusiasm for collectivity has brought her to get involve in various projects (for instant workshops and discussions cycles). She also created her own association in November 2017. Along with the artists collective
À VENIR, she carried out two exhibitions in unoccupied commercials buildings in the cities of Caen and Cherbourg in May 2017 and 2018.

♦ THE PROJECT ♦

January 2019 marks the second exhibition of our ongoing project ”Plastic Love”. The first edition was in February 2017. It involves the research of various forms of art and dealing with the concepts of artificiality and sensuality. It also plays with different ways of diffusion and representation. For this new edition, artworks will take place in a glazed space, downtown Paris where there is a lot of shops. The gallery has the characteristics of a showroom with a complex relation to commercial. This statement is our start point of multiples reflections and creation. We wish to propose a hybrid experience that combines art gallery, clothes shop and immersive art installation. The ambiguity will shake up the spectator with the aesthetic idea of visual attractiveness in the contemporary art.

Our exhibition questions the concepts of consumerism in new and different ways. Hundreds of stores line the famous Rivoli street, attracting a myriad of shoppers every day. Against this backdrop, can the artists subvert the purpose of consumption? The main feature of our gallery space is its seeming integration into the commercial surroundings, which allows us to subvert the codes of storefront communication. Thus, we can lure the public in and let them discover a universe that digresses from their shopping experience and leads them to new and unexpected thrill.

The curators and selected artists will be present during opening hours to provide guidance to the spectators. The exhibition opening, for everyone, will feature a live performance by “Devine” (Léo Fourdrinier and Clément Davout). Their show will be projected and possibly seen from the street, to allow passers-by to enjoy the performance.

♦ À VENIR ♦

The collective À VENIR is based in Paris and Bruxelles. Composed by four young artists, they met at l’école supérieure d’arts et médias de Caen/Cherbourg while they were studying there. Since 2017, they organized exhibitions in empty commercials building, while creating artistic paths in the cities. The association À VENIR is a working partner of Plastic Love for this edition and made financials resources available for the administrators and curators.

♦ THE ARTISTS ♦

The exhibition combines artists who were already there at the first edition of 2017 and new ones invited by the curators. Mixing styles and medias, they all have singulars propositions and work between twisted or distorted objects, visual imageries borrowed or non-artistic methods as poetry. All of the artists have a distant and critical point of view on the media images being trow at them in our society. So we though it could be ingenious to show they works in front of a glazed space, in a neighborhood surrounded by shops, boutiques and commercials stores.

♦ Plastic Love 기획 의도 ♦

프랑스에서 전시 기획자이자 작가로 활동 하고 있는 허정입니다.
2019년 1월, 동료 작가 Pauline Creuzé와 함께 파리의 중심상업지구인 샤틀레에서 11명의 젊은 작가들을 초대하여 Plastic Love라는 전시를 준비 중입니다.
이 프로젝트는 난해하게 다가올 수도 있는 기존의 현대미술과는 다른 방식으로 일상속의 환경과 상황을 연출함으로서 관객들에게 새롭게 접근하려는 의도에서 출발했습니다. 트랜디한 편집샵을 연상시키는 형태를 띈 이번 전시는 파리의 중심 상업지구에 위치하고 있는 갤러리의 장소적 배경을 전시장 안으로 가져왔으며 각기 다른 색깔을 지닌 12명의 작가들이 관객들의 일상에 예술적인 경험을 제시할 수 있도록 기획되었습니다. 참여 작가들은 가게의 데코레이션, 제품 프로모션, 의류상품의 디스플레이, 브랜드 슬로건과 같은 다양한 마케팅 코드를 작업에 차용하였으며, 전시 공간 안에서 설치와 퍼포먼스의 형태로 작업들을 선보일 예정입니다.

♦ 기획자 소개 ♦

허정 / 프랑스에서 작가이자 전시 기획자로 활동하고 있으며 2016년부터 전시 형태를 다양하게 변형/응용한 예술 이벤트를 진행해 왔습니다. 소형 자동차를 전시, 퍼포먼스 공간으로 활용한 Drive me somewhere 프로젝트, 미술학교의 로비 공간을 놀이터 처럼 해석하여 일주일 동안 예술과 유희의 성격을 동시에 지닌 다양한 이벤트를 주최한 Playground 프로젝트, 그리고 인공적인 조형성을 주제로 한 첫번째 버전의 Plastic Love 전시 기획을 맡은 바 있습니다.

Pauline Creuzé / 같은 학교 출신으로, 프랑스에서 작가이자 전시 기획을 하고 있습니다. 여럿이 함께 작업하는 것에 관심이 많아 워크샵이나 토론회를 진행한 경험이 다수 있으며, 2017년 동료 작가 3인과 함께 À VENIR 협회를 결성하여 프랑스 Caen과 Cherbourg에서 시내의 빈 가게들을 전시공간으로 활용한 프로젝트를 2017년과 2018년에 걸쳐 두 차례 기획하였습니다.

♦ 참여 작가 ♦

첫번째 Plastic Love 기획전에 참여했던 몇몇 작가들과 기획자들이 새로이 초대한 작가들로 구성되어 있으며, 다른 영역간의 불확실한 경계에 관심을 가지고 있거나, 변형된 오브제나 차용된 이미지를 주로 사용하거나, 예술 외의 영역에서 볼 수 있는 요소들을 가져와 재활용 함으로서 시적인 탐구를 한다는 점에서 서로간에 작품 세계를 공유하고 있습니다. 이런 작업들을 쇼윈도의 성격을 지닌 전시 공간으로 가져옴으로서, 상업적인 배경과 작가들의 작업이 만나 일으키는 마찰 사이에서 예술과 경제간의 관계를 심층적으로 재고할 기회를 마련하는 것이 이 기획전시의 목표입니다.
