Fort Kochi, India : Clean up Mahatma Gandhi Beach/Nettoyer la plage Mahatma Gandhi !

100% Of the funding will go towards this project

Fort Kochi is a small town in the district of Cochin, Kerala. The area has high potential to be a tourist hot spot with beautiful palm trees and ancient fishing nets. However the main attraction, Mahatma Gandhi beach, is covered with litter and driving away tourists.

The amount of litter is due to both a lack of bins and education about waste management. The local population are used to throwing their rubbish on the floor, and this is a habit we want to change.

Our project proposal is to manufacture bins, organise a collection service with the local council, and to educate locals about using the bins and not littering.

The current state of Mahatma Gandhi Beach - July 2014

GVI India on their first litter pick - July 2014

This project will be undertaken working with GVI India Kerala, the base currently focuses on English education in impoverished schools, improving the care at schools for the disabled and working with improving the quality of life at a local orphanage.

There is a constant supply of active volunteers who are always looking for more ways to help the community, and simply making the environment a nicer place to live in is one that they are currently very excited about.

In the west we usually take our public services for granted, bin collection being one of them. It is shocking to see the state of a community without these public services. Not only is the area unpleasant to look at and live in, there is also a serious public health risk to the public and local wildlife that many of the community need to survive.

Allocation of funds

By doing this, and working in parallel with routine GVI run litter picks, we hope to achieve a long term solution to the problem, thus attracting tourism to the area, creating jobs for the locals and protecting the local wildlife from hazardous waste.

Your funding will go towards the manufacturing of the bins and the communication campaign towards the public. Any extra donations will be put towards more specialised litter picking tools for the parallel project.

In the future we hope to spread the project to wider areas to create a better living standard for the people of India.

GVI are an international organisation based in the UK who run development projects in impoverished areas.

What your funding will go on:

- Production of 20 theft resistant bins at 20€ each (400€)

Per Bin cost: Plastic mesh (4€)

                              Metal sheet for container (4€)

Nuts and bolts per bin (1€)

                              Rope for handles (1€)

Metal chain to lock bin in place (3€)

                              Lock (1€)

                              Bricks to stabilise bin (2€)

4€ for extra costs linked with production

- Tools for the education of the local public about using the bins i.e. flyers, lessons in schools, signs.
