Histoires de la plaine

Stories of the plain takes you at the very heart of the Argentinian pampas. For fifteen years, vast fields of transgenic soybean have outplaced the farming of « the best meat in the world ». A human and ecological catastrophe recounted by the inhabitants of Colonia Hansen, a hamlet and pocket of resistance.

The shooting and editing of the film are complete. We now need your help to finalise post-production !

Synopsis

Director Christine Seghezzi sets her camera in a small town in the Argentinian pampas, amongst endless soybean fields.

A few houses, a flag, a school. And, where two trails meet, a customerless grocery/café/gas station.

Why there ?

Because in the last fifteen years, these lands have been through a frantic transformation, mere synonym of the economical and ecological disaster of the country.

Fifteen years ago, it was the epicenter of Argentinian pampas, hub of an extensive livestock farming providing « the best meat in the world ».

But this farming required capital, manpower, slaughterhouses, a supply chain...

Transgenic soybean farming has taken over. An easy farming, as well as profitable through exportation. But also... bringing about devastating ecological and sanitary consequences, due to massive pesticide spraying via airplanes. A dangerous weapon that has turned the land into a cancer-filled area - under the pressure of globalised capitalism laying down the law throughout the various political and financial crisis of Argentina.

Stories of the plain relates this disaster, through the eyes of the inhabitants of this hamlet.

And of course, other stories emerge. From not so long ago, when Indian tribes populated these lands. Or from even more recently, when, away from the big cities, dictatorship ruled and wrecked.

Christine Seghezzi's unflinching filming makes these stories poignant, and redeems these men and women of the pampas, puppets of a History they may endure, but that does not fool them.

One of the last shot of the film : pampas, endless soybean fields, sunset golden light. A beautiful landscape, seemingly peaceful. Suddenly, we hear an engine. An airplane appears, and goes around the field.Twice, following the exact same route. That's how pesticide spraying becomes vivid – and so does the beauty of this threatened population.

Director's statement

Argentina and I have shared a long history, that has brought me to film this beloved and cherished country again and again.

In Buenos Aires I shot the film Rivadavia Avenue, where memories, origins and an Argentinian past « that won't go away » conjugate along this avenue known for being the longest in the world.

Since 2010, during my trips to Argentina, I have been hearing about soybeans. Harmless word that has grown to scare me. At first, I didn't get it. Soy, for me, was a healthy ingredient, mostly found in Asian food. And then I started reading, searching, watching, seeing…

Transgenic soybean farming intruded into the Argentinian territory, sweeping everything away : cows, wheat, corn, ancient traditions and local population, dispelled from their lands. Mono-farming has created unforeseen diseases. It sterilizes soils that used to be the most fertile in the world. The catastrophe is ecological, sanitary, cultural.

Once it had been brought to my knowledge, it was impossible not to do something. I settled in the tiny hamlet of Colonia Hansen, right in the center of soybean production, to relate this catastrophe through tales of men and women still living and working there. In the making, I dug other stories from this place, stories that were buried under the soybean plants.

The film was photographed by acclaimed Argentinian Director of Photography Willi Behnisch, and edited with exceptional editor Claire Atherton.

But we need support to finish the film : to carry about sound editing, sound mix, and color correcting.

The stakes uncovered in this film are too high to let this project go. This is why we're asking for your help, so the film can reach theater screens in 2016.

Good news is, if you help Stories of the plain out with a few euros, the most part is tax-deductible in France, because the organisation operating this fundraising can deliver tax receipts, that we will hand over to you at the end of the campaign.

In the press

Allocation of funds

Where will the money go ?

The film was shot in 2014 and the editing is over.

But we do need funds to complete post-production, sound editing, sound mix and color correcting, and that's where 15 000 euros will go. This amount also insures the production of technical material necessary to the theatrical release of the film : DCP, bluray, posters.

Budget

POST-PRODUCTION IMAGE 3 000 €

  Colour grading 4 days

  POST-PRODUCTION SOUND 5 000 €

   Sound editing 15 days

   Sound mixing 7 days

  ENGLISH SUBTITLING 2 000 €

  SUPPORTS OF SCREENINGS

  (Blu-ray, DCP) 5 000 €
