"Impossible is not Liz" of course... but there are times when practicality has to take over from will and courage and for this reason Liz Wardley has had to cancel her departure next month in her attempt to paddle across the Atlantic in an outrigger canoe. A project that the diminutive Papua New Guinean is still determined to achieve: "The story does not stop here! Not only will it continue, but it will be all the more exciting and wonderful!" Even though the disappointment is deep, Liz Wardley remains positive and this unfortunate chapter will not impede the adventures of the antipodean warrior...

"I have not cancelled! This Atlantic crossing is a dream that I have been living with for many long months and that I will definitely achieve one day. This is for certain! But for this dream not to turn into a living nightmare, it is necessary to delay the departure. “The main reasons are due to logistics: the escort boat for the crossing has been delayed and its arrival in the Canaries would be too late, therefore reducing our stand by period for favourable trade winds, which was already very restricted. To leave just for the sake of leaving would reduce the likelihood of success and jeopardize my safety and it is just not worth it.”

“This crossing is not just a “communication stunt”; those who know me wouldn’t believe that for a second! However, the project is not just mine, it also belongs to everyone who follows me: my team, my partners, my supporters and the media with whom I want to share this adventure. At this time I do not have sufficient funds to provide the necessary media coverage to send pictures and make interviews etc.

"At the moment, yes. It is not in my nature to abandon my goals. I was really motivated and, despite many difficulties, I felt capable of achieving my dream. However, there are times when we have to face facts and "be reasonable" ... even if I hate this word. I feel bad for my partners and supporters: I did not wish to betray their confidence, but they understood perfectly and their ongoing support is deeply touching and has helped me get over the initial disappointment. Today I recovered my positive attitude, as I know that we will see the end of this adventure together. It is just a question of time."

Also, rigorous testing of the equipment and canoe that wasn’t possible before, but with the additional time available we can now achieve. We will continue to prepare and test the canoe by doing several mid distance paddles to prove both the boat and myself.
