Pour ceux qui ne me connaitraient pas encore, je suis contrebassiste, leader et compositeur. J'ai grandi dans la banlieue ouest de Paris, et vis à Paris depuis maintenant 8 ans. Je suis surtout connu comme un sideman très actif dans le monde du jazz (membre d'une douzaine de groupes ; on peut m'écouter sur une vingtaine d'albums) mais c'est à travers ma propre musique que je m'épanouis le plus.

For those who do not know me yet, I am a bassist, leader & composer. I grew up in the Western suburb of Paris, and live in Paris, since 8 years now. People mostly know me as a quite active sideman in the jazz world (indeed, I am a member of several groups (like a dozen) & you can listen to me on around twenty albums), but what is blooming me the most is to play my own music.

A l'occasion d'une carte blanche qui m'est accordée à la Boutique du Val à Meudon, j'enregistrerai mon deuxième album, en live les 17 et 18 novembre 2018. Ces deux soirées et cet album feront suite à mon premier album Elements, sorti en 2015 sur le fameux label Fresh Sound New Talent. J'y ai gardé mon quartet de base, composé de Ben van Gelder au saxophone alto, Tony Tixier au piano et Gautier Garrigue à la batterie. Viendra s'y ajouter Camille Durand à la voix le 17. Enzo Carniel sera au piano le 17.

So, thanks to the « Boutique du Val » in Meudon (suburban area of Paris) which offered me the opportunity of a Carte Blanche, I am glad & very happy to announce the record of my second album, a live one, on November 17 and 18, 2018. These two nights and this album will follow my first album, named Elements (released in 2015), under the famous label Fresh Sound New Talent. I will play with this same quartet, composed with Ben van Gelder (alto saxophone), Tony Tixier (piano) and Gautier Garrigue (drums). Enzo Carniel (piano) and Camille Durand (vocals) will be our guests.

L'EQUIPE

Cela fait maintenant plus de dix années que je joue avec Tony Tixier et Gautier Garrigue. Nous avons joué ensemble dans différents groupes, notamment en trio, dans les groupes de Logan Richardson, de Scott Tixier, sous mon nom aussi. Au fil du temps nous avons tissé des liens solides, une grande complicité et un mode de communication musicale quasi télépathique. Tous deux font partie de mes musiciens (et êtres humains) préférés sur cette planète.

It has been more than ten years since I played with Tony Tixier and Gautier Garrigue. We played together in different bands, including our trio, several Logan Richardson's bands, with Scott Tixier, and under my name as well. Over time, we have forged strong bonds between us, a great complicity and an almost telepathic way of communicating music. Both are part of my favorite musicians (and human beings) on this planet.

J'ai découvert Ben van Gelder sur MySpace, à la grande époque du site, il y a environ 12 ans. Il postait sur son profil des enregistrements en trio saxophone alto, contrebasse et batterie qui m'ont fascinés et qui m'ont surtout interloqués par leur force musicale et leur beauté. A 16 ans, Ben était déjà un musicien accompli, avec un vrai discours et une personnalité immédiatement identifiable. Etant un grand amateur de saxophone (alto en particulier) et un immense fan des musiciens de la cote ouest des Etats-Unis, période cool, (Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, Stan Getz...) le son de Ben et son vocabulaire m'ont tout de suite parlé. L'idée de collaborer avec Ben a été à l'origine de l'enregistrement de mon premier album Elements.

I discovered Ben van Gelder on MySpace, at the big time of the website, around 12 years ago. He posted trio alto saxophone, bass & drums recordings on his profile, which fascinated me and which took me aback by their music strength & their beauty. At the age of 16, Ben was already an accomplished musician, with a true sound speech and an immediately recognizable personality. As a big fan of saxophone (and especially alto sax) & a huge fan of « cool » period musicians from the West Coast of the United-States (Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, Stan Getz…), I felt in love with the sound of Ben & his vocabulary. To collaborate with Ben has been the original idea of the recording of my first album Elements.

Cela fait maintenant environ cinq ans que je connais et joue avec Enzo Carniel. Nous avons collaboré dans de nombreux projets, notamment dans les groupes de Logan Richardson et Hermon Mehari ainsi que dans mon quintet. Enzo est un pianiste et musicien complet. Sa virtuosité, son lyrisme et son inventivité en font un musicien majeur de la scène jazz française. Je suis heureux et très honoré de l'accueillir dans mon projet.

I know and play with Enzo Carniel since around five years. We collaborated in many projects, including the groups of Logan Richardson, Hermon Mehari and in my quintet. Enzo is and complete pianist and musician. His virtuosity, his lyricism and his inventiveness make him one of the major musicians on the French jazz scene. I am happy and honored to welcome him in my project.

Camille Durand est une jeune chanteuse, connue aussi sous le nom d'Ellinoa. Elle a deux albums à son actif, notamment le disque de son grand ensemble, le Wanderlust Orchestra pour lequel elle compose, arrange et chante. Sa dévotion et l'intensité de sa musique font d'elle une voix unique dans le jazz actuel. Camille sera mon invitée le 17 novembre.

Camille Durand is a young singer, as well known as ‘Ellinoa’. She has already released two albums, especially her big band album, the ‘Wanderlust Orchestra’, in which she composes, arranges and sings. Her devotion and the intensity of her music make her a unique voice in the contemporary jazz. Camille will be my guest on the 17th of November.

LE REPERTOIRE

Mon intention avec cet enregistrement live n'est pas de faire un album de compositeur.

J'ai assemblé le répertoire de ces soirées sous l'angle du "jouage", du collectif et du plaisir. Chacun ramènera des compositions personnelles et j'amènerai de mon coté des compositions ainsi que des propositions de reprises inédites. John Coltrane, Björk, Duke Ellington et le Great American Songbook seront à l'honneur.

My intention with this live recording is not to make a composer's album. I compiled the répertoire of these evenings to favorise the "playing", all together and with pleasure. Each musician will bring back personal compositions, and I will bring, for my part, compositions as well as proposals of unpublished covers. John Coltrane, Björk, Duke Ellington & the Great American Songbook will be in the spotlight.

LE LIEU

La Boutique du Val est un petit club ultra chaleureux et convivial, situé à Meudon dans les Hauts-de-Seine. Créé initialement par Jean-Rémy Guédon, aujourd'hui géré par le collectif Archimusic, il accueille des projets inédits et originaux, mêlants musique, cinéma, cuisine... Sa capacité réduite d'accueil (environ 30 places) en fait un espace d'écoute privilégié.

The ‘Boutique du Val’ is an ultra chaleureux and convivial small club, located in Meudon (in the Hauts-de-Seine). Originally created by Jean-Rémy Guédon, nowadays it is the ‘Archimusic collective’ which is in charge of the place. It welcomes exclusive & orignals projects, confounding music, cinema, cuisine... As it can welcomes about 30 spectators/auditors, it is a privileged listening room.
