THE UNIVERSE OF “EN-VILLE”

Forever transformed by climatic turmoil and catastrophes, the Earth has changed its face since long now. The refugees have intermingled on new grounds and have built a city with forgotten boundaries... A city that speaks all languages, in which all people have learned to live together: the En-Ville. This first short film sends us in the whereabouts of one the numerous areas of the En-Ville, and maybe the most mysterious, the Crakzone.

THE ROOTS OF THE PROJECT

Mister Five is an interactive narrative project split into a series of short films that are currently in progress. These short films revolve around several main characters; enabling viewers to discover this unique universe from different perspectives:

- Mister Five, an amnesiac shark fisherman and the forgotten tales from his vast district of Creole.

- Ayasha, the huntress searching throughout En-Ville for priceless seeds lost long ago.

- Yash and Saturne, stranded near a forbidden district; these are the main protagonists of the first 17-minutes long movie, which will be shot from October, 17th to 20th 2013.

SYNOPSIS

In this new world, a young man wanders for years in the whereabouts of a strange and fearsome district that looks like Paris: the Crakzone. It is impossible to survive in this hostile environment without inhaling the scent of the Oblivion Flower; thereafter your dreams or your worst nightmares come to life...

Yash visits the Crakzone far too often. On this evening, in order to break this vicious cycle an imposing man named Saturne has decided to resurface Yash’s past brutally.

In the middle of the night remerges the legend of Yash, his lost gift and of the mysterious watchmen.

While the forgotten past of Yash and of the En-Ville reappears, at the end of the alley the forbidden district keeps on growing…

CHARACTERS

YASH (Nicloas Ly)

Orphan and native of the Jaipur district Yash is an ambiguous being. Since a few years Yash lives on the edge of the real world, the busy and lively En-Ville; and of the forbidden world of Crakzone. Eager to understand what surrounds him, he is ready to risk his life. Will he cross again the boundary he has created between himself and his extraordinary talent for the ancient art of frescoes painting?

SATURNE (Bruno Flender)

Before arriving here some twenty years ago, Saturne had committed the worse and had found Oblivion in the Crakzone. For him, Yash can still manage to get a better life, thanks to his talent for painting. He then breaks all taboos by helping Yash to make a first step towards what he himself had lost long ago.

PLACES

In the heart of the En-Ville, there is a forbidden area where a forgotten drama has happened many generations ago. This district bathes in strange greenish light. In the film “Legends”, the Crakzone will not be shown, but only the streets located near its boundaries. Our researches have allowed us to locate a natural setup which seems ideal to represent the whereabouts of the Crakzone, a space wild and urban, desolate but poetic.

TIME

The story takes place from an evening until the following morning. The film should be 17 minutes long.

SOUNDSCAPE

Throughout the film, the background sound of En-Ville is mostly a mix of noises from a far crowd with hawkers shouting in Hindi, Arabic and Russian and of cosmopolitan melodies of travelling musicians. The Crakzone that is wrapped in the greenish light also shows itself from a sound point of view. Its deep beats, irregular and intervallic, often resonate like a muffled heart.

THE MUSIC

The music will originate from all the sounds surrounding the two main characters, and won’t be placed during the editing process. The last sequence brings in a furious drumbeat of the crowd assisting the colour festival.

The end credits will welcome the real orchestrated music of this film, a mix of Indian sounds, Slavic strings and Creol drums.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Inspired by the crude and intimate atmosphere of Tarkovski’s movie Stalker and the contemplative constructive style of Jarmusch, the pictures in the short film “Legends” are realistic and slightly tinted with expressionism but most and above all moved by the rhythm of today’s world

The focus is as much centred on the opaque and foggy greenish radiation of the Crakzone that we discover from the very beginning of the film, as on the main characters.

The morning will bring a set of surprises to Yash with the bright explosion of colours and pigments. In fact the traditional Indian Holi festival is one of the numerous cultural traces of our world which has survived in the “En-Ville”.

MAKE-UP

Two make-up styles will be created for this film: the crackled blue skin of the Crakheads and the faces covered with pigments of the colour festival (Holi).

The small flower of oblivion gives blue skin to whoever consumes it or visits the Crakzone. The challenge will be to bring out the natural aspect of this tint.
