The piece “Between Two Lands” questions the dissimilarities between the land of birth and adoptive land. It toggles between two states. It is in a state of observation. The centerpiece in natural fiber is restored and embroidered with the wheel of life. Philippe, Jennyfer and I searched how to replace or restore the fiber with a semi- transparent structure. The delivery was long and difficult. I developed three projects before I stopped on the current concept.

The structure is still being worked on by a cabinetmaker and an extraordinary carpenter, Pascal Frisa. Work is in finishing.

It is time to introduce the newest member of the team, the fabulous photographer Thomas Bremond. He began his career in journalism. His first mission was with rebels in Niger. Since, Thomas has worked in cinema.

In the project he helps to enrich the human dimension, so central to this adventure. The challenge is to deepen the understanding by witnessing and documenting the gestures of work by the team. Calling to return to the soul of the project, man.

Thomas interpreted this reflection by a sentence when I presented him with the concept "You know Tal, people in the West, and particularly in Paris, do not want to be photographed, but they want to be beautiful in the pictures. I seek the soul of the person in my photo not his beauty. This is what I could reach in the most precarious situations, and I have been missing since. Maybe thanks to “Embroidered Memories”, by a real research, by natural gesture of creative work, we could grasp the soul, even in Paris “.

«The Worker “refers to the economic suffering and insecurity associated with immigration. Thus, the piece is fragile. It consists of a lamp and a working surface traditionally for handwork. The lamp is marked by a dramatic gesture and continuous embroidery covers the entire electric circuit, from the bulb to the socket.

It is also a result of an encounter with contemporary cabinetmaker Hubert Kerléo, who recently went on a walk near his studio, in the woods, to search for broken branches of wood and test them as legs….

In parallel Jennyfer and Philippe advance together on the innovative aspect that is the use of embroidery in the manufacture of a lamp; integrating by that structure, esthetics and function. We are now in finishing.

6 more days to the end of this crowdfunding!.............................................................

The "Tea break " offers a moment of pause in the life of an immigrant and a time to recall his memories. This object uses cultural mix and questions the boundaries between local and global, and between functionality and ' art for art ‘.

It is designed in honor of a universal tradition, with a stool and turntable. It is made of a perforated metal gallery, embroidery on the seat, new wooden frame and carved legs.

The Tree of hope,

Details are very refined; an echo of the gallery is drawn on the seat. "The tree of hope» a 3 dimensional embroidery seeks to break the limit of the flat embroidery on the seat creates an original embroidered sculpture. For that Jennyfer used a technic used in fashion and by reducing the pearls and spangles she reduces the volume of the embroidery, the result is a unique embroidered sculpture, a technical premier and a movement of hope.

18 more days to the end of our collection, Come to discover, share and contribute to our project. It is gratifying and simple.

What is Crowd funding? Social media websites that allow people to donate small amounts of money that adds up to fund valuable larger projects. In our case, believe with us in our project and values and help us achieve 3500€ by the end of the next 22 days. It’s all or nothing, and YES, we can do it with your help!

Why helping?

The primary motivations for donating are

Sympathy: contributing to friends and family, friends of friends, a community.

Empathy: helping others achieve their goals, contribute to the common good and social change and participating in a story while in process.

Identity: supporting likeminded people and be a part of a community that supports similar values, interests, ideas or cause.

Happiness: simply because you find contributing fun, or you like contribute to crowd funding.

Interest: Getting a reward or a share in the project

“Social revolution”: Be a part of an alternative way to fund cultural productions which is in a way a “social revolution” and an alternative to more traditional institutional forms of cultural funding; to my opinion a more democratic, sharing, responsible way of living.

I hope you can identify with one of those groups, please learn about the project and contribute. It’s rewarding, simple and discreet.

«Interrogative Identity», A multilayered art and entrance object. It is anamorphic mirror inhabited by a chimeric animal creating an " interrogative Identity” that Reflects the difficulties of keeping integrity while adapting to the constraints of the outside world.

This piece posed a new challenge as we near the end of the production. I wanted to create a chimeric animal that could incarnate successfully an invented realism, not simple.

In parallel we transformed a Napoleon III framework, into an anamorphic mirror by restoring and silvering it. Then we built the rest of the relief details around it. The challenge is harmonizing these two strong and different images that demand creating a coherent visual language.

Around this time Philippe Moreau, an extraordinary upholsterer and a militant Craftsman joined the project. Philippe has a remarkable talent. With this piece Philippe said he was able to practice the ensemble of his techniques and knowledge of his career.

The creation of the head is particularly difficult ... We worked in a team of three with Jennyfer the embroiderer. We started by sizing a canvas directly on the animal structure in ceramics then placing future openings in the textile. Seeing how the textile reacted, Philip created the first mask in traditional canvas upholstery.

To improve the realism of the head we study the structure of the horns again with Christine Bruckner, an astonishing ceramist seeking a better balance of weight, appearance and texture…to be followed

Your support is invaluable in helping us to complete the production.

Shortly after the meeting with Roman the restaurateur, I met Jennyfer Moret. Jennyfer, a young embroiderer in luxury fashion (“haute couture”), quickly becomes a key person. A creator herself, this is an opportunity to adapt her know-how and experience of the Haute Couture in an entirely different field.

Jennyfer has developed a unique expertise in addressing the concept of embroidery as a three-dimensional object, carved without support. This is the case of the “Tree of Hope” on "immigrant" or the eye in "Interrogative identity". Our collaboration started naturally open and full of imagination, sometimes in three, with Roman and later with Philip.

The embroidery creation in the project is the result of back and forth between recycling traditional pieces of embroidery from the Middle East, between my concept and compositions and Jennyfer’s creation, which harmonizes all elements and adds her footprint. As a result, pieces of the Israeli Jewish and Palestinian embroideries are harmonizes despite their differences.

In our approach we represent a practical interpretation to current thinking. We adopt a cooperative and horizontal method of production and creation. We experience the "circular economy" by an approach based on up cycling. We put to life these reflections of our time!

About Romain,“The immigrant”,and the search for materials in Paris

After finding the embroidery I searched for broken and old French furniture that represent my adoptive country. Traditional embroidery from the Middle East are combined with recycled or restored French furniture and blend into objects, stories , memories , culture and craftsmanship .

It was in 2012 that I met Romain Maldague, a very important contributor to the project. Romain is a cabinetmaker and restaurer passionate about his work. He was immediately charmed and touched by the sense of initiative and originality of the project. We work together on each project. I present sketches and we refine through dialogue together to find the best compromise between our desires and the technical constraints in their achievement, between restoration and new creation. Through the new particular challenges, Romain was able to experiment new techniques, for”Tea break” for example the armrest was carved from horn. Our aim was to find harmony between the embroideries, restored, recycled and new elements.

Our second creation was “The immigrant” that refers to a stage of a journey and immigration. It inspires fragility, wandering mobility. The functionality of the furniture/art work and the sense of its use are revisited. The seat is wide and rests on two legs and a cane that becomes a coat rack. The balance is fragile. Napoleon III chair back is recovered and restored by Roman then integrated into a new structure. The structure leads the eye to the embroidery. The seat dialogues with the embroidery. There is delicate balance between restoration and new creation, between functionality and art.

Hello, Thank you very much for your confidence, your comments and contributions.... Let me tell you how I found Jewish embroidery in Israel.

I immersed myself in a search for Israeli Jewish embroidery. I wished to harmonize it with Palestinian embroidery, together representing my birth place.

But what is Jewish embroidery in Israel?
I remember as a child the Russian embroidery on shirts of the generation of my parents and my grandparents or the embroidery of the Jews of Yemen. Every Jewish immigration has brought the expertise of its country of origin by incorporating Jewish symbols.

I decided to search for Jewish embroidery in Israel today, but where?
I discovered Moroccan and Ethiopian Jewish embroidery. I'm still looking for Yemeni Jewish embroidery. After a long search, I found associations promoting Israeli-Ethiopian Jewish embroidery and met a Moroccan embroider.
The language and cultural barrier is at the heart of the complexity of this project. Thanks to the willingness of all partners , and excessive patience, we were able to introduce beautiful pieces, like the Queen of Sheba and the Jewish god represented by a lion into the project.

This adventure is only just beginning as the first stage of research for material is well advanced. I gathered the materials and I made contact in Paris with extraordinary craftsmen who are sensitive to the concept and it is with them that we are pursuing the creation of the final art works.

More than ever we need your contributions to complete the production of these art works and your personal and professional networks to help us raise the necessary funds.

Stay tuned.

Hello,
Many of you have written, commented and contributed to our project these days. I want to thank you for your support and your trust.
I wonder which aspects of the project you find interesting.

Let me tell you through anecdotes the origin, atmosphere, difficulties and human adventure of our project.

As the project begins with the admiration of knowledge and respect for the other, I’ll start from the beginning.

The idea for this project began to form in my head for some time after returning from a trip to Jerusalem.
It all started during a walk in the old city of Jerusalem. I was in the market of the old city’s Muslim Quarter when I found myself in conversation with a textile and embroidery merchant. Mahmud wanted to show me his collection of extraordinary Palestinian dresses. I discovered a treasure! Some dresses were made by hand 30-40 years ago. From different geographical areas they tell stories and represent different symbols. Upon discovering this, I was very touched and seized by the fineness of the work. Then I plunged into the study of these symbols, their origins and this unique technique. On returning to Paris I continue my research. I was driven by the idea that such expertise deserves to be updated. I wished to incorporate these symbols into new objects that blend with western taste, colors, trends..
Through a friend in Paris I contacted Nadima in Damascus that organizes a group of embroiderers with whom we were able to produce the first adapted pieces.
We faced many challenges to give life to this project: the difficult political situation in Damascus has deteriorated significantly since, the lack of confidence, our language differences, the different visual culture ... We overcame all of these differences and achieved the richness of this project. These pieces were later harmonized and worked on by an embroider in Paris. They represent my native land; they symbolize the birthplace of immigrants.

In three days, I tell you the story of the Jewish Israeli embroidery.

stay tuned!
