is a journalistic project about a part of the world where the importance of a sustainable relationship between the human being and his environment is clear.

Eleven countries, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, over 200 milion people, share the water of the longest river in the world, the Nile, and its tributaries.

The international treaties that rule the use of the Nile water were signed in the fifties under the sovereignty of the British Empire. The right of use of the Nile water were assigned mainly to Egypt and Sudan. At the time Egypt had more than one third of the population of the area. Today it has less than one quarter of the population.

This significant demographic change and the reduction of the available water caused by climate changes, make urgent the research and testing of new kinds of sustainable development and collaboration among countries that share this resource.

Why this reportage?

It is necessary because there is plenty of information about problems but a lack of attention on the ongoing search for solutions as carried out by NGO, UN and international organizations, researchers, scientists, workers, farmers: thousands of people who everyday manage the problems and look for viable ideas.

The purpose of this reportage is to have a clear picture of the present situation, show the positive ideas and examples and find out the best practices of sustainable development and international cooperation in the area. It will showcase experiences that can possibly be exported in other areas of the world.

As the The Nile Basin is a very large region, it requires that the project be divided into several independent reportages that will give rise to separate exhibitions which will be gathered together in an final E-book of photographs, interviews and short videos. 2013 has been declared International Year of Water Co-operation by the United Nations: this is therefore the right time to find out how things are going!

I cambiamenti climatici, l’aumento della popolazione, la crescita economica, rendono sempre più urgente lo sperimentare nuove forme di sviluppo sostenibile, di ottimizzazione dell’uso delle risorse e di collaborazione tra paesi.

Il bacino del Nilo è una delle zone del mondo dov’è più evidente la necessità di un’interazione sostenibile tra uomo e ambiente ed è una delle zone chiave per le organizzazioni non governative, le nazioni unite e le altre istituzioni internazionali che lavorano per migliorare il rapporto tra uomo e ambiente.

Le acque del Nilo, fiume più lungo del mondo, e dei suoi affluenti sono vitali per la sopravvivenza della popolazione di Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Sud Sudan Tanzania and Uganda.

I trattati internazionali che regolano i diritti di sfruttamento delle acque risalgono al tempo della decolonizzazione ed assegnano la stragrande maggioranza dei diritti all’Egitto seguito da Sudan.

Rispetto ad allora è cambiata però la densità demografica del continente africano: l’Egitto nel 1960 da solo rappresentava un terzo della popolazione dei paesi dell’area. Oggi la sua popolazione è meno di un quarto.

I cambiamenti climatici e il riscaldamento globale tendono a far diminuire l’acqua disponibile.

Lo scopo del reportage è avere una visione d’insieme dei progetti e delle idee migliori. Mettere insieme gli esempi positivi e rendere chiaro quali possono essere le idee per uno sviluppo sostenibile e di collaborazione tra i popoli dell’area che permetta il miglioramento delle condizioni dei vita senza compromettere l’ambiente.

Il Bacino del Nilo è un area molto estesa per cui il progetto sarà diviso in diversi reportage che , oltre a dare vita a mostre indipendenti, saranno riuniti in un E-book finale fatto di fotografie, interviste e brevi filmati. Il 2013 è stato dichiarato dalle Nazioni UNite L'anno Internazionale della Cooperazione sull'acqua: l'anno giusto per scoprire come stanno andando le cose!
