<p> Two weeks ago I met for the first time the kids who will go to Sapa thanks your donations. School on the boat team announced them the good new and explained them the project as well. I can tell than they are already very excited !&nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="Dsc_0264_-_copie-1472631637" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/345860/DSC_0264_-_copie-1472631637.JPG" /></p>
<p> Without documentation, the only jobs available to these families are very low paying and labor intensive. They stand as motorbike taxi drivers, farmers, markets workers, recyclable waste collectors and sellers of inexpensive goods along the Long Bien Bridge (lemon tea and roasted corn).</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Most of the families work day and night trying to offer adequate living conditions to their families, Nevertheless, their daily average salary is between 50,000 VDN to 100,000 VDN (about $2-5 per day). These earnings are not sufficient to feed their families, maintain their houses or send their children to school. The parents cannot afford to pay the annual fees required to put a child in public school.</p> <p> Most of the mothers even often illegally fled hospitals after giving birth, unable to pay the hospital fees, which is another reason why children are not enrolled in school.&nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="100-1470747317" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/342147/100-1470747317.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="111-1470747436" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/342148/111-1470747436.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="13-1470747509" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/342149/13-1470747509.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 9px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.3em; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; word-wrap: break-word; color: rgb(68, 68, 68);"> <strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit;"><u>Cr&eacute;dits photo</u>&nbsp;:&nbsp;</strong></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 9px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.3em; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; word-wrap: break-word; color: rgb(68, 68, 68);"> <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">School on the boat</em></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 9px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.3em; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; word-wrap: break-word; color: rgb(68, 68, 68);"> <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">Jeremie Lusseau</em></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 9px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.3em; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; word-wrap: break-word; color: rgb(68, 68, 68);"> <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">Akiko Tomotari</em></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 9px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.3em; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; word-wrap: break-word; color: rgb(68, 68, 68);"> <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">Mathieu Arnaudet / France Volontaire</em></p> <p> &nbsp;</p>
<p> <em>Today we focus on the families which are supported by School on the boat and see their living conditions along the Red River..</em></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> Since 2011, School On The Boat sponsors families and children living in illegal settlements in 3 areas of Hanoi: in the Island, an island formed by two sides of the Red River under the Long Bien Bridge, in the Fisher Village, on the edges of the Red River or in the Long Bien area, a shanty town in the Long Bien neighborhood.</p> <p> These families are not part of the labor market in Hanoi; they tried to find better living conditions in the capital but failed. Indeed, beneficiaries left their rural areas to try their luck in the &lsquo;prosperous&rsquo; Hanoi. Unfortunately, stuck in precarious financial state, they are penalized by the fact that they have no papers, nor authorization to live where they settled. They had no choice but to settle in harsh part of Hanoi, in the grey area of the legislation where no taxes are to be paid and no paper are required. Moreover due to the expansion of Hanoi and their illegal situation, they can be evicted anytime.</p> <div> <p> Therefore, they have to find alternatives to survive in Hanoi. They built transitory and precarious floating shelters, made of basic materials such as tins, steel sheets and plastic covers. In addition, the Red River where these houses float is very dirty. Most of the population of Hanoi throws their trash along the riverbanks. The families have no other option but to use the river water to bathe and wash their clothes and dishes. Surrounded by waste and polluted water, stagnant water full of insects, they faced major sanitary issues.&nbsp;</p> </div> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="1-1469716790" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340416/1-1469716790.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="2-1469716804" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340417/2-1469716804.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="4-1469716905" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340418/4-1469716905.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="3-1469716928" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340419/3-1469716928.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="5-1469716950" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340420/5-1469716950.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="11-1469716966" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340421/11-1469716966.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="9-1469716979" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340422/9-1469716979.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <img alt="10-1469717041" src="https://d3v4jsc54141g1.cloudfront.net/uploads/project_image/image/340423/10-1469717041.jpg" /></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <strong><u>Photo credits</u> : </strong></p> <p> <em>School on the boat</em></p> <p> <em>Jeremie Lusseau</em></p> <p> <em>Akiko Tomotari</em></p> <p> <em>Mathieu Arnaudet / France Volontaire</em></p>
