Taste Of Heaven

The cooking RPG with a pinch of RogueLite

Taste Of Heaven

Taste of Heaven is a cooking RPG with a pinch of Roguelite. "Embark on a relaxing, wholesome, and flavorful trip to the realm of spirits and cook up your destiny throughout the very birthplace of the Universe." Welcome, traveller! We are Chromatic Dream, a young indie studio from Réunion. For 6 years, we have been working relentlessly on Taste of Heaven, a mystical cooking RPG for all of you gourmet adventurers! In 2022, we won the Game Cup, the National Trophy which rewards the best French indie game creators, in the Newbie category. After this galvanizing experience, we are now readier than ever to pull up our sleaves and cook up a flavourful adventure just for you! We're just missing an ingredient yet : YOU! Not in the pan, but more like... as support! A game made in Réunion Réunion is a French, multicultural island in the Indian Ocean, where many myths coming from various creedences have long been a vector of creative and diverse iconographies. Aside from the sun, the volcano and the lagoon, our island, often called the "Intense Island", owes this title to the unique perception people have of its vivid spectrum of beliefs, which is a strong source of enrichment for the mind and clearly a matter of local exceptionalism. Taste of Heaven is an ode to this enrichment. By employing local talents from Réunion based collective Bouftang, our studio Chromatic Dream acts as a prism to cristalize and make these incredible fresques shine beyond the ocean on an international scale. Japanese exceptionalism at the core Although there is a strong local identity to our game, in as many vibrant attempts as possible, the main cultural mythos shown in Taste of Heaven takes its roots in Japanese culture. It was very important for us to create a soothing game, based on an utmost zen atmosphere. From Bryan's chill music scores to Rodolphe's smooth animations and sceneries, we targetted a game style where replayability meets comfort and calm. In the country of the Rising Sun, there is a particular care given to many things, like tea ceremony, Kobe beef or how to trim a bonsai tree. At Chromatic Dream, we believe all of this to be a part of Japanese exceptionalism, but all these things have yet another common denominator. This denominator, and somehow the key to this exception as we wanted to translate it into interactivity, is meticulousness. In Taste of Heaven, we want you to experience a comparable feeling to what should be felt when one carefully weaves circles in the sand of their Japanese garden. In other words, the cherry upon the cake, which bears the hopes of seeing Taste of Heaven blossom into the seamless, chill, soothing game that we want it to be, is yours to place, as your contributions to our project shall partly define whether we can take the time to do things the right way or not. In order to propell Taste of Heaven above the clouds, and treat players with as refined a title as we can, we made a list of gradual goals to attain, each of which represents one or several potential ingame features. Your donations could even allow us to ship our game on consoles one day, with a physical, if not even a Collector's Edition! Here is the list of our donation goals: The more you will donate, the farther the horizon will expand for Taste of Heaven. Although there are already many characters, places and features in the game as it is, we still have a lot of quirky ideas to add in the cooking pot! If you want to contribute to our project, you will not fall short of counterparts! Here is a list of them. When we designed these, we simply asked ourselves: "What would I like to see in Taste of Heaven’s Collector’s edition?". The exact answer to that question is what you will get if you pick one of our higher tier menus. Also, all of our physical goodies are hand crafted. In other words, the more goals we meet, the vaster the skies will be for Taste of Heaven. Our story begins in the Void. Stranded in a most peculiar world, our hero will meet Allium, Zittau and TresBon, a weird bunch of quirky, yet friendly Onions. He will tag along with them by becoming their cook, and with their help, he will embark on a journey to find a way back home. If the party falls during their trip, they will rebirth at the first Oasis. At the beginning of every run, the player will be able to pick a set of ingredients from the farmer. A few Onions will come along with the player to help him during the different game segments. Later, the player will have the possibility to grow more Onions by buying Onion seeds. After leaving the first Oasis, the player will stumble upon a map, which randomly generated every run. The player gets to choose his/her own path. On the map, each icon represents one particular in-game task, and indicates its specific game style. Players will automatically jump from one task to the next until they reach the sector’s BOSS. If you believe that in Taste of Heaven, you are simply going to cook nice meals, you're in for a surprise. In fact, there are many different game styles. We sincerely hope that this variety will serve the roguelite experience just as it should, by adding some rhythm. As a matter of fact, one of our primary ambitions is to make Taste of Heaven as replayable as can be, with a wide range of surprising gameplays, each requiring a different set of skills. The Cooking In Taste Of Heaven, sharpen your cooking skills to the edge and satisfy customers! Receive help from your Onion staff to better understand their tastes and get the cooking right in order to obtain the highest rewards. You can even decorate your booth with items, which will allow you to trigger various effects during your service. While preparing a dish, you'll have to pick among an increasingly large variety of ingredients. By mixing different ingredients together, you will be able to create Special Recipes that can grant bonuses, allowing you to face difficult situations and get better rewards! According to the legend, there is an incredibly powerful emotional state called Taste of Heaven, that may occur when a customer is exceedingly satisfied. Apparently, it would make customers so relaxed and joyful that they suddenly become VERY generous. Hiking in the Void Eventhough most naturalists who got there to study its peculiar fauna never came back to tell their stories about it, the Void is reknown among spirits as a particularly dangerous, yet magnificent place. It is a location so dark it barely exists, which isn't a problem for the grotesque creatures living there when it comes to eating whatever wandering thing that passes near them. During this game phase, you will have to run away from these creatures, while also commanding to your Onion sharpshooters to toss forks into their eyes. "It's so crazy it just might work..." Michael Scott, 2009 The Onion Arena When they are not busy cooking, Onions have yet another passion... Fisticuffs! They actually developped an art revolving around it, using strategies and whatnot. During this game phase, the player will benefit from the help of his/her Onion staff. The amount of "little helpers" will directly depend on the amount of Onions in the staff. While some of them will brawl with their tiny fists, others will shoot forks from afar, and there will even be some Taikos, beating on their drums to galvanize the rest of the troops. Boss Fights At the end of each sector, the player must face a boss. Each boss fight works the same as during a service task, only there's a pretty peculiar customer to handle, to say the least. Morphalus is currently the only boss available in the demo. There are other bosses that you will encounter in the final version of the game. Our passion for classic adventure games and their lores triggered our will to develop an intricate story, and by extension, a particular focus on narration. You will be able to discover the various areas we imagined later, and we certainly hope that all of the crowdfunding goals will be met so that we can get to work on all of them! If you enjoy our project, feel free to come aboard! If you want you can already join us on Discord. if you want to discover the current closed demo, you can click on "follow" on the Taste of Heaven catergory page on Twitch, or simply follow our Translator's channel in there, who often streams the game and keeps you updated about our freshest news. You can also follow us on Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and also on Twitter. We thank you in advance for you generous donations, and we hope to meet you very soon!

Allocation of funds

As an Indie studio, Chromatic Dream can only hope to grow into something bigger, hopefully one day into a comfortable structure that would allow us to create side by side with other professionals from Réunion, because we could actually employ them and help boosting employment on our beautiful island in the process. Cutting the cake Here is a diagram explaining how your donations will be shared among us: If we want to implement some of that Ghibli inspiration that we care so much about in Taste of Heaven, we will have to refine animation, music and the lore in general to a level of perfection that is barely reachable at all, even with the proper time to spend on it and subsequent fundings. However we do trust the groove of our synergetic team core for that, given what we've been able to produce together so far. Yet, we won't be able to keep up with the workflow that a full game release demands and at some point, we will need new trusty team mates. To Heaven and back! For a very wide range of reasons, we decided that Taste of Heaven HAD to be a roguelite. Times are tough for classic story driven adventure games, and replayability has become an inevitable asset for any indie game trying to emerge even slightly today. Playing a game for twenty hours and replaying a game for hundreds is not the same at all. Not only our game loop must be impeccable, but it also needs to remain entertaining, which can be a true wager in terms of narrative design. Hence, the game will also have to evolve storywise and such textuality is a luxury that we cannot afford currently, which is also why we need you. Recruiting trusty partners Bouftang is an awesome association. As a matter of fact, it is the womb that has birthed and shouldered so many local talents during their first steps as professionals that we don't even have to wonder about who to recruit next. Now that Bouftang has helped us so much lately, carried us through success and now that we finally have a chance to shine, this crowdfunding gives us the opportunity to return the favor and help our friends from Réunion, or should I say our family. Preserving our independance The most important reason, because all the others actually cascade down from this one, is the maintainance of our independance. Until now, Taste of Heaven has been able to evolve along with a soothing wind of freedom, and every partner we have is truly passionate, fully on board with us in this project. We would like to keep things this way, but the industry makes it so that without your help, we would probably have to turn to publishers, which would most certainly end up altering our vision and taking away our freedom to choose whoever we want to work with on Taste of Heaven. Chromatic Dream started when two passionate game designers met: Rodolphe Bax (art) and Pierrick Cheminade (dev). They met at Little World Studio in Lyon during what was their first studio experience. In 2012, they created Chromatic Dream, in order to start designing original and catchy games that they would conceive during their free time. Soon, their first game was published: Jamsouls (on Steam and Xbox 360). 2022 was a decisive year for the studio, because this is the year it officially became Chromatic Dream Limited, which granted a new company status better fit to our ambitions for our new projet: Taste of Heaven. Rodolphe BAX aka RodStar974 Illustrator and gourmet extraordinaire born and raised in Réunion, Rodolphe finds harmony between making 2D HD games and his comic book Overkiller, probably one of the best in the world if not in the whole solar system. He is the Lead Artist and loves to make everything both soothing and colorful. If you have already seen his face, that's because he has become our mediatic figurehead lately. Pierrick CHEMINADE For 12 years, Pierrick has been roaming the seas of the gaming industry, as a globe trotter or even a polyglot adventurer to be more accurate. He has been a developer for such prestigious structures as Codemasters (Birmingham), Ubisoft (Newcastle/Chengdu) or even Square Enix (Tokyo). He has worked on various projects like Colin McRae Rally, The Crew, The Division, Assassin's Creed: Origins & Kingdoms, but also on numerous gamejam titles and indie games. As sturdy as an oak, he acts as the keel to our ship, that prevents it from capsizing. Bryan BARGOIN aka Arklan Composer, Sound Designer and VFX Artist, Bryan is a young virtuoso with a degree from the ILOI (Institut de l'Image de l'Océan Indien). He specializes in sound effects, musical ambiance and musical scores. He would be the sail of the ship, which uses a light and invisible force that has the potential to lift a whole vessel nonetheless. Thomas GUERMEUR aka Toto_Rollmop Professional Writer and Translator since 2012, Thomas has been a lifelong passionate gamer who specialized in indie game localizations (translation and adaptation for a target audience). Among the crew, well, he's the lookout guy, the one with the spyglass who may randomly start to get overexcited over a rock somewhere on the horizon... and translates stuff. Here's his Twitch channel where he'll keep you updated about our freshest news: We have introduced the core team of the game, but it would be unfair to go further while failing to mention another entity. The Bouftang Collective The Bouftang Collective was born in april 2014 from a necessity: to weave and strengthen the economic fabric of the game making industry in Réunion. For that purpose, its members organize energizing actions on a regular basis, in order to keep this professional sphere afloat. Since its creation, the sector's activity has multiplied into numerous local studios such as Chromatic Dream (our proud vessel). Many game projects were given a chance to exist thanks to this new dynamic. Bouftang has recently obtained the SNJV label, hence raising the proud banner of the harbour where we shall recruit our future mateys ! Obviously, a ship can't sail without a crew, and that is another reason why we need your help, because in fact, our partners at Bouftang are not mateys. They won't feed upon one rancid potato every two days while drowning their misery and their homesickness in a barrel of rum. They're developers, artists... They are true game makers and we want them aboard, so that they too can be a part of this great odyssea and get a chance to export their talent oversea. Promoting local craftmanship with our goodies Digital content is not everything when it comes to gaming. For a title to exist, there is an untold rule (not) saying that there NEEDS to be a plush made after the quirkiest character in the game. Since the card of quirkiness is played by a trio in Taste of Heaven, we needed reinforcement. We decided to look for local artists who could design our goodies for us and we found exactly who we were looking for. So, not only will your donations help our game maker association to rise, it will also help other local artists who weren't directly bound to the world of gaming professionally, but now can, thanks to you. If you want to discover Béatrice's work further, feel free to visit her Facebook page and to follow her on Twitter. If you want to discover the awesome Geekali convention and Miely's work on Facebook. Creative energy is what gives any game project a reason to exist, but as fantastic as the flame of passion can get, it may also burn off pretty fast without an external intervention. Seiya... Get back up Seiya! The life span of a video game can be incredibly erratic for a terrifying amount of reasons. Sometimes, whenever there is uncertainty preventing one from achieving something, it is just better to ask for help, which is exactly what we are doing. We have great expectations for Taste of Heaven, but we need to know somehow that we won't fall short of hands, of time or funds. We just want to make a nice game, something soothing and colorful, quirky and entertaining, something that tells a nice story, but with some unusual changes of pace. We want to keep control over all of that and deliver a game somehow shaped by all the intellectual honesty that we are capable of. We sincerely hope that you will love Taste of Heaven as we do. We will work hard to make it so and we thank you for your time reading this and for your potential future generous donations. Many Thanks to all the people from Réunion and elsewhere, all the friends, all the colleagues who voted for Taste of Heaven during the GAMECUP. Thanks to La Banque Postale, La région Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Le pôle image Magelis and all of the KissKissBankBank team for your support to game makers. Thanks to La région Réunion and specifically to the audio-visual department of the DIDN (Direction de l'Innovation et du Développement Numérique) for their great involvement in the game making field in Réunion. Obviously Thanks to all creators from Réunion and all the members of BOUFTANG. Thanks to the ILOI (l'Institut de L'image de l'Océan Indien) for existing and for having trained so many young talents over the years (and we're not just saying that because Rod was once a student there...) Thanks to all the streamers in our growing community. We won't forget all the great involvement you have shown and we wish to see you very soon for the next chapter of our great adventure. Many thanks to Victor AKA "Boeuf" for filming our AMAZING showcase video with us, hence allowing it to be that awesome and all the food in it to be so truly appetizing. Also thanks to the collective TORTOR, especially you Blenderman, AKA Pierre Fontaine for your presence, your patience and your benevolence, your salad sandwiches (weird), and your 3D pictures of our Onions. Thanks to all the people who have wishlisted Taste of Heaven on Steam, it sure helps a lot! Thank you all for your future contributions, shall they be tremendous or minor. Most of all... Thank YOU!
