Tierra Madre jungle reforestation and Wild life conservation in Costa Rica
Tierra Madre is an ecolodge, reforestation and conservation project that has been fighting deforestation for more than 12 years in an area of vital importance for the biodiversity of species in Costa Rica. We aim to consolidate and expand our wildlife and rainforest sanctuary by protecting part of the biological corridor in which we are located and become a reference in ecosystem rehabilitation and sustainabiity education in Costa Rica. Between 2008 and 2018, in addition to conserving the 8 hectares of primary rainforest forest subsisting on the land, Tierra Madre reforested more than 18 hectares (180.000sq meters) on the slopes adjacent to it. With the forest spreading again, a rich and diverse fauna came back to occupy the land and after less than 7 years the first big predators arrived. Thermal cameras, as well as biologists from our NGO FAWN partners, opened our eyes to the exceptional potential of our geographical location, at the crossroad of three different climate zones and offering a cool, humid "retreat" to the fauna of the nearby reserve during the dry season. All this led us to consolidate our conservation project to turn 50 of the 60 hectares into a sanctuary by reestablishing an endemic jungle. Deforestation and habitat destruction are global phenomena, leading to the extinction of species and contributing to a great extent to climate change. Tierra Madre reforestation and conservation project aims to protect existing mature rainforest, rehabilitate the soil depleted by cattle farming and return it to its original state of perennial jungle. The objective being the restoration of complete and balanced biodiversity, the focus is about more than planting trees at low cost for an immediate return such as CO2 storage. We mimic natural processes over a period of 8 years on each plot, commit the land to reforestation forever and ensure that our methods minimize overall disturbances while maximizing benefits for the local wildlife and the ecosystem. Reaching the goal will ensure: The reforestation of 1 new hectare (10.000m2) and reinforce the connection between Tierra Madre reserve and the biological corridor, starting in 2022 on rehabilitated land. The desired objective for this year would be to exceed this goal (54 000€) and plant a total of 3 hectares or more, which will also ensure the start of a soil rehabilitation process on 7 extra hectares aiming to begin in 2025/2026, and the maintenance and conservation of the existing 25 hectares reserve.
For every 45 euros collected we will plant an endemic tree, care for it and ensure its harmonious growth during three years. The 25m2 they are planted on will be left to develop back freely into a mature jungle, and provide food and shelter to hundreds of animal species such as sloths, ocelots, pumas, jaguars or toucans. Those 45€ are allocated as follows : -38% (17€) for 25m2 of land and land preparation prior to planting -27% (12€) for mowing, pruning, watering, tools purchase and area maintenance during 3 years -13% (6€) for trees: seeds collection, planting, potting material, transplanting, nursery -11% (5€) for the overhead costs, maintenance of Tierra Madre reserve -11% (5€) for the crowdfunding platform commission and international transfert costs More information on our website
