Un rucher 2.0 : en ligne pour mieux connaitre et protéger l'abeille.

Knowing is protecting; the project will establish up an apiary eight local bee colonies to provide a free set of figures to the attention of teachers and students, and a multimedia library on life bees. The site abelejo consolidate two large free areas:

Objectives of this space are to put in numbers (quantify) a part of behavior and life of bees in order to make student working on figures.

For example : from which humidity bees react and how do they react? What are the temperature variations within hive? Can we measure activity of bees following weight changes ? … All these data can be provided by one or more sensors fitted to the hive. These sensors provide : * The weight of the hive and the colony, * The temperature at the center of the hive, * Humidity at the center of the hive. We’ll be able to add datas from weather the nearest weather station (Besançon) like temperature and hydrometric values or our own data if we can afford our weather station. After contact and receipt of technical documentation, the system that caught my attention is the measurement tool of German society:

CAPAZ

It proposes a robust telemetry system, compact and most scalable: the basic version saves data in an internal memory, but it is possible to graft a GSM module. In addition there is a Palette Version 4 supports that directly contains 4 hives to follow! The sensor version for one hive below:

The sensor version for four hives below:

Those datas will be collected automatically every quarter hours and posted every two weeks on the web site (or directly according to the generosity of crowfunders see below!). They will be available in raw form (txt format) or as already worked (moving average 3 hours for example). In addition, an event log will provide to understand unexplicable variations (spin, adding feeders, intervention by the beekeeper, etc.)

In parallel to the data center, the site will offer a multimedia area, including photographs and films, all in creative commons license CC - BY - NC. Everyone can submit ideas of course, but I would begin: The photo center :

In this space, teachers and students will find

   * Anatomical charts of the different types of bees (queens, workers, larvae, males) and this for different species of bees present in the apiary, * The chronophotography to visualize the different stages of rays construction, a frame body every day at a fixed time for a whole cycle of laying, etc. * A 3D model of a hive in Sketchup textured pictures taken, * Etc. The video center :

The video will be used to account for the specific activity on the flight board (foragers, ventilators, babysitters, etc.) or the allocation of tasks on the frames. Given the large storage capacity, it is also possible to imagine the creation of the film beard characteristic of a swarm leaving the colony. Finally, I do not have yet a lot of tracks, using a microphone embedded in the heart of the hive is possible. In short, we see here all the interest of such a site where those interested can also submit ideas.

Here's an example of what might be available in the media center: photographs from my personal library are interesting, because there are different types of cells and can observe them:

1. empty cells, 2. filled alveoli not yet clogged honey, 3. pockets full of stuffy honey wax seal (milky white) 4. alveoli with stored pollen (protein source) 5. cell containing a bee larva (yellow domed lid)

However, it is not enough to allow students to work! Close-up of cells are not clear enough and no graduated referent permits to realize the size of what is shown. In short, a lot of work ahead to get out scientific images, but it is worth it !!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But where have this idea? When I started up my own apiary with two friends there 4 years, we were surprised to find that the Internet has no or little technical or scientific data on bees. Advice on apiary management remain very oral and most technical books offer little quality photographs or numerical values. Finally, it seems to me that a way to educate the generation that comes to the problems facing the bee is to better know this insect better understand better protection.

On the picture above: my parents, a friend and I (in jeans and green barbour), but now, here is ... I'm dressed like a cosmonaut: thank you colleagues from the School of Rahon !!!

Allocation of funds

Fund will allow us to constitute an observation hive with 8 Dadant hive type comprising : . 1 floor, 1 body, 1 up, 1 cap, 1 roof and 19 frames: € 110, . 1 local bee colony consists of a cluster of workers and their queen): 150 € It makes : 8 x 260 = € 2,080

A measurement tool to € 1400 for obtaining the values: . the weight of the hive, . the interior temperature of the hive, . the internal humidity of the hive,

The costs of crowfunding : € 387.

                                                 --------------------------------------------------------------------

Certain adjustments for better shooting will be needed but are not included in the budget. This is personal crafts to see inside the hive or observe the construction of structures

Moreover, I already have all the beekeeping equipment (clothes, smoker, brush) and shooting (camera and HD camera), no investment is to make that side. Finally for computer part, any investment is needed because: * The site and the game data (files little heavy texts) will be hosted in wordpress (abelejo.wordpress.com is ready, even if for now it is empty!) * Multimedia part will be hosted on flickr for photos and youtube for videos (with links that go under wordpress) If exceeded, the money will be invested as follows: € 1,000 more than originally planned: a paddle-type multi-meter to accommodate four hives,

€ 2,000 more than originally planned: the type of multi-range meter for 4 + hives weather station measuring the mean direction and speed and maxis wind, temperature and relative humidity of the air, atmospheric pressure,

€ 3,000 more than originally planned: the type of multi-range meter for 4 hives + weather station + GSM system for sending data on a daily basis. I hope a large enough mobilization so that no one feels compelled to make donations too heavy and that the project succeeds anyway, then: tell to tyour friends !
