A sheepfold to save and share !

Classified as a Small Walloon Heritage Site in Belgium, the former half-timbered sheep-fold of Otrange in the village of Oreye is one of the rare examples of the traditional 18th century Hesbignon construction that has survived.

Unfortunately, the wear and tear of time is a major threat to the street-facing façade of this exceptional building. The objective of this campaign is to raise the missing funds to restore the southern facade using traditional techniques.

The project has two objectives:

- to PASS on our heritage to new generations,

- SHARE this little gem by making it available for local activities.

The sheepfold :

• Its history

Whoever mentions the province of "Hesbaye" thinks "granary" and simultaneously "big square farm".

However, these huge complexes should not overshadow the smaller traditional buildings that made up the majority of the built landscape. Much more modestly, a multitude of small farms stretched along the roads. Built of perishable materials, only a few copies remain. Yet they were the most common houses, those that were said to be an architecture without an architect, because they were designed and built by the locals from what they found in the area.

Very few of these so-called "stud" or "Pans de Bois" buildings remain today.

In Otrange, while there were still some left in the 20th century, you will find very few today: this sheepfold, a house on the other side of the Geer, and some small parts of farms.

• Its architecture : STUD

• Why it’s of interest

Here is an excerpt from the letter from Mr. Alain Delchef of the association "Qualité-Village-Wallonie":

"There are only a few dozen monuments of this type left in Wallonia that are included in the inventory of immovable cultural heritage. In addition to its rather rare construction method, your sheepfold constitutes a trace of the life of small farmers in Hesbaye at the end of the 18th century. As such, it deserves to be safeguarded under the best possible conditions. Your restoration process therefore contributes to the slow re-appropriation of the daub, which requires qualified craftsmanship. »

• It’s presence in literature

            • « Le Patrimoine Monumental de la Belgique (The Monumental Heritage of Belgium) – Wallonie - Volume 18/2, pages 482 et 483 »

            • « Le cahier promenade paysage et patrimoine – Vallée du Geer – Oreye-Otrange » by Jacques Verstraeten and Julien Mols

            • « Oreye – Bergilers, Grandville, Lens-sur-Geer, Oreye, Otrange » Brochure published on the occasion of the European Heritage Days, 13 September 1992 .

The activities proposed at the sheepfold :

• "Le Peup’Lié d'Otrange", is a Citizen's Collective for “better living together”.

Our wish: to eat healthy, local food, in accordance with our environment.

Our desire: to make the village spirit live in a spirit of sharing and good humour.

We are villagers from Otrange and the surrounding area who gather to buy fruits and vegetables, and other products - mainly organic - grown by small local market gardeners and fruit growers. Allocation of funds

Restoration and maintenance:

Work has been carried out regularly since the owners' acquisition in 1982: replacement of the curved roof tiles, ground consolidation, consolidation of the western and northern walls, construction of a staircase and flooring on the first floor and work in the adjoining house.

All that remains is to take care of the street-side gable. It is a traditional restoration, faithful to the original, calling upon qualified professionals to restore the sheepfold to its original appearance.

1st Step: The street-side gable of the sheepfold in 2016 (Photo 1)

2nd Step: Installation of scaffolds, construction of a partition to insulate the front of the building, dismantling and evacuation of the mud and brick filling between elements of the stud-lumber woodframe by the owners and their friends in 2018 (Photo 2) Budget 2676 €

3rd Step: Sealing and covering the facade during the construction of the new woodframe in the workshop in 2018 (Photo 3) Budget 1836 €

4th Step: Dismantling and evacuation of the facade woodframe from 26 March to 4 April 2019 (Photo 4) Budget 1458 €

5th Step: The new woodframe made from oak stud-lumber was assembled by the carpenter in a traditional way, faithful to the original, using mortise and tenon studs. Transported to Otrange, it was assembled in the street and then, with the help of a crane truck, was lifted and installed in one piece on 6 April 2019 (Photo 5) Budget 12 153 €.

Work still to be done:

6th Step: Install a structure made of wood and willow sticks. Budget ± 500 €

7th Step: Fill the spaces between the lumber woodframe elements with an old-fashioned cob (clay, lime, barley straw) to be made by a specialized craftsman (using elbow grease). Budget ± 2600 €

8th Step: Bleach the cob with lime and linseed oil. Budget ± 700 €

9th Step: Roughen the roof edge adjacent to the lumber woodframe. Budget ± 900€

10th Step: Make and place two wooden frames, thereby bringing light into the sheepfold. Budget ±1500 €

The budget for this restoration is estimated at ± 26,000 euros.

To pay for this work:

a significant personal contribution from the owners has been madesubsidies were requested and 7500 € were granted by the Public Service of the Petit Patrimoine Populaire Wallonthe benefits of a flea market that will be organized at the sheepfold by the Peup'LiéThese amounts will not suffice, which is why we are appealing to you for an amount of 5000€, knowing that part of the sum collected will go to Kisskissbankbank: 5% as a commission and 3% for bank charges.

If the collection exceeds the necessary amount, the surplus will serve to :

make various repairs on the other cob facadesclean and paint the other interior walls of the sheepfoldcarry out the electrical and lighting installationsupport the projects of the Peup'Lié and associations making use of the sheepfold.
