Yes, it's been a while, but man, what a year it has been (so far)! With all these lockdowns, restaurant opening restrictions, travel bans, etc, Beachbird has been struggling to get its feet off the ground. As you may imagine, now is not the ideal time to be opening a coffee shop. I was luckily able to back out of the shop location in June. And while summer wasn't as catastrophic for business as imagined here in the south of France, this second round of lockdown is what I had apprehended the most. Which is why, for the past few months, I have been working on plan B: a website where you can order Beachbird specialties and have them delivered straight to your doorstep (in and around Aix-en-Provence). Beachbird.fr
is now live and open for business!! Check it out, let me know what you think, and spread the word if you know of anyone living in the area! And for all those wondering, the coffee shop project is simply on hold for the moment, until a better and brighter 2021! All of my savings and your contributions are staying warm in the bank, waiting for the right investment. The good news is, since I was on the brink of opening back in April, I already have all of the furniture and equipment to open Beachbird Coffee Shop & Pâtisserie quickly and smoothly when the right opportunity shows up. Et ce n'est pas encore fini ! Avec tous ses hauts, mais surtout ses bas, ses surprises et ses incertitudes, 2020 n'aura pas été l'année idéale pour se lancer dans l'aventure d'un coffee shop. Par chance, j'ai pu me rétracter en juin de l'achat du fonds de commerce sur lequel je m'étais projetée. Même si l'été n'a pas été aussi catastrophique que prévu dans le Sud, cette deuxième vague est ce que je redoutais le plus. Nous ne sommes pas encore sortis de l'auberge ! C'est pourquoi je me suis penchée sur un plan B : un site web où vous pouvez passer commande pour vous faire livrer des spécialités Beachbird à Aix-en-Provence et ses alentours. Beachbird.fr
est désormais live et prêt à recevoir ses premières commandes !! N'hésitez pas à y jeter un coup d'œil, me dire ce que vous en pensez et partager avec votre entourage. Et pour ceux qui se demandent où ça en est du projet coffee shop, celui-ci est tout simplement en pause en attendant de plus beaux jours. Je continue à chercher des locaux, mais 2021 sera certainement plus propice au développement d'un tel projet. En attendant, mes économies et vos contributions restent bien au chaud à la banque. Le côté positif dans tout ça ? Puisque mon ouverture était imminente en avril dernier, j'ai déjà tout le mobilier et l'équipement pour être prête à ouvrir dès que j'aurai ciblé la bonne opportunité ! <p>Hey everyone, </p>
<p>We’re starting to get used to challenges here at BEACHBIRD!! This time, you most likely know who is responsible for the delay we're going to be experiencing. The coronavirus has us all confined in France and many projects are at a standstill. For us this means that the signature to obtain the keys of my shop will again be delayed. But we’re looking at the bright side! This just gives us more time to be ultra prepared for when we will finally be able to open. So I’m rolling up my sleeves, heading into the kitchen, testing my recipes, ordering the last few items, and setting things up slowly but surely. </p>
<p>On that note, some of you may have received an email from Paypal today concerning your donations. This is totally normal! At the time of the campaign, no payment was made. Your donations were simply pre-authorised by Paypal until my project was closed. I was only able to close the project this week, as I was dependent on the opening of my business bank account, which in turn was dependent on finalising my loan agreement. So if you have received this email, please click on “yes” to authorize the payment. </p>

<p>Une fois n’est pas coutume, le projet BEACHBIRD va encooore être décalé ! Cette fois ci, vous imaginez tous la cause. Le coronavirus nous oblige à repousser la signature du local. Mais puisqu’on préfère voir le côté positif, cela nous donne juste plus de temps pour être bien préparés pour l’ouverture ! Alors on continue, on pâtisse, on passe les commandes, et on met tout en place tranquillement. </p>
<p>D’ailleurs, certain d’entre vous ont du recevoir un mail de Paypal concernant vos contributions. Cela est tout à fait normal ! A l'époque de votre contribution pendant la campagne, aucun frais n’avait été prélevé. Il s’agissait d’une promesse de don jusqu'à ce que je clôture le projet. J’ai pu clôturer le projet que cette semaine car cela dépendait de l’ouverture de mon compte bancaire pro, lui-même dépendant de l’obtention de mon prêt bancaire. Alors si vous avez reçu le mail de Paypal, cliquez bien oui pour autoriser le paiement. </p>

<p>It’s finally here! That moment when I get to announce <strong>the opening of BEACHBIRD</strong>!!!</p>
<p>The journey has been long and strenuous. Getting my loan approved was no easy task. But thanks to your donations, I was able to prove that my friends and family support my project and that I had the financial capacity to create my coffee shop. I signed my loan last Friday, which officially starts the countdown till the grand opening! The next steps include signing the official sale, getting the keys, repainting, redecorating, and testing all of the new equipment. If all goes as planned, <strong>we should be opening on the second week of April</strong>. </p>

<p>L’aventure fut longue et ardue. Obtenir mon prêt n’a pas été facile mais grâce à vos dons et votre soutien j’y suis arrivée. Vos contributions, tous ces commentaires et cette engouement pour mon projet m’ont permis de prouver aux banques que j’avais le soutien et les capacités financières nécessaire à l’ouverture de mon coffee shop. J’ai signé mon prêt vendredi dernier, ce qui lance donc le compte à rebours jusqu'à la grande ouverture ! Les prochaines étapes sont la signature de la vente, l’obtention des clés du local, peindre, décorer et tester tous les nouveaux équipements. Si tout se passe comme prévu, <strong>nous devrions ouvrir la deuxième semaine d’avril</strong>.</p>

<p>Avis à tous les fans de Beachbird !! Nous terminons cette année en beauté avec une super nouvelle, et quelle nouvelle !</p>
<p>Nous avons un local ! je répète, <strong>nous avons un LOCAL</strong> !!</p>
<p>Je ne pourrais pas être plus excitée et heureuse de partager cette nouvelle avec vous. Et pour être honnête, je suis contente que les choses aient pris cette tournure, parce que ce nouveau local est fantastique ! Il se trouve dans le coeur du centre ville d'Aix en Provence, à quelques dizaines de mètres de la place de la mairie. Dans une rue très passante, à deux pas du marché quotidien et de magasins attrayants aussi bien pour les locaux que les touristes.</p>
<p>Et encore mieux, ce local n'a absolument pas besoin de travaux, mis à part un petit coup de peinture et ma touche perso bien sur ;-) Même si cela signifie bien sûr un prix d'achat plus important, je suis rassurée de savoir que je n'aurais pas de surprises et de retards dus à des travaux (à rallonge...) Et grâce à vos généreuses donations, je serais tout de même capable de refaire à ma sauce la cuisine et de la compléter par des éléments essentiels à ma vision du coffee shop ! <strong>Alors merci encore, merci mille fois d'avoir cru en moi et en mon projet, de m'avoir soutenu financièrement et par toutes vos ondes positives </strong>(et petits messages ;-) ) Merci de m'avoir fourni le coup de boost me donnant la force et la volonté de toujours avancer !!</p>

<p>Nous avons signé les documents lançant ainsi le processus d'achats, et je croise maintenant les doigts (tous, même les doigts de pieds !) pour avoir mon prêt à temps ! Si tout se passe bien, j'aurais les clés du local fin février, puis quelques semaines pour la peinture et ma fameuse touche perso et <strong>nous serons prêts à ouvrir d'ici fin mars </strong>! <p>Calling all Beachbird fans! We're wrapping up 2019 with one last bit of news, and what great news it is. <strong>We have a new location</strong>... I repeat BEACHBIRD has found its location!!! I couldn't be more excited to share this news with you. And to be honest, I am glad things turned out this way, because this new location is fantastic! It is in the very center of Aix en Provence, in a street with heavy foot traffic, close to the city hall, the daily farmers market, and other shops that attract both locals and tourists. On top of that, this location doesn't require any construction work, besides a bit of paint to freshen up. While this does mean a heftier price tag, I am reassured to know that there won't be any delays or surprises. And thanks to your contributions I am going to be able to complete the existing kitchen with specific pastry material and replace some of the furniture to make the coffee shop unique. <strong>Thank you again for believing in my project and extending a helping hand, giving me a much needed boost to start my business. </strong>As the privileged few, here are some pictures of the existing location (currently a tea shop) :</p>

<p>We signed the documents initiating the sale of the shop. I am now crossing my fingers to get my loan request approved. If all goes well, I will get the keys to the shop at the end of February. And following a couple of weeks to repaint, refurbish, and rehearse, <strong>we should be up and running by the end of March! </strong>(here's a sneak peek of what we're aiming for below)</p>

<p>Depuis mon dernier mail, il y a eu quelques rebondissements. J'ai l'impression que dans le monde de l'entreprenariat, une bonne nouvelle est souvent suivi par une moins bonne nouvelle. Et malgré mon envie de vous montrer que les côtés positifs de l'aventure, je me dois d'être transparente avec ceux qui sont au plus proche du projet. Donc, voici où nous en sommes... tout juste après avoir atteint le deuxième palier de la campagne, j'ai également appris que mon propriétaire souhaitait se rétracter de la vente du local. Cela faisait plusieurs semaines que je travaillais avec mon architecte pour estimer les travaux necessaires à la mise aux normes du local. Malheureusement, nous avons vu que d'importants travaux auraient dû être supportés par le propriétaire qui s'était stratégiquement dédouané de toute responsabilité dans le bail. En essayant de négocier une modification du bail, le propriétaire s'est rendu compte que je n'étais pas une proie facile. Il a donc préféré se rétracter de la vente. Je suis hyper déçue, car je m'étais bien projetée sur ce local, mais je sais que c'est mieux ainsi. Il faut reculer pour mieux sauter, n'est ce pas?! <strong>Je suis maintenant plus informée, plus forte, et plus déterminée que jamais</strong> à trouver le bon local. J'aimerai que vos contributions soient le mieux investi que possible, pour que Beachbird puisse devenir un commerce pérenne. La recherche d'un nouveau local risque de prendre un petit peu de temps, mais je vous informerai dès que le projet avance. Je suis aussi impatiente que vous de voir Beachbird ouvrir ses portes.</p>

<p>Since our last update on the coffee shop progress, there have been a few ups and downs. As I am quickly learning, in the world of entrepreneurship, every good news is often followed by a not so good news. And while I want to share only the positive and sunny side of the adventure, I want to be transparent with those who are close to the project. So here goes... just after learning that I had reached the 2nd goal of the campaign, I also learned that my future landlord retracted from the sale of the coffee shop location I presented in my project. I had been working closely with my architect to estimate the renovations necessary to abide to French regulation. Unfortunately, in doing so, we came to the realization that some of these renovations should have been done by the landlord and that he had conveniently modified the lease to his benefit. When I confronted him, he realized I wasn't going to be an easy target and prefered to end the deal. I am very sad, to say the least, but I know this is for the better. I am now back to square one to find another location. But I am stronger, determined, and more informed than ever. I want to be able to invest your contributions wisely on a location where I am 100% sure that Beachbird will reach its full potential. This may take a little bit more time, but I will keep you updated, as I am just as impatient as you are to see this coffee shop open!</p>

<strong>WOW!!!!! we made it to 100% of our goal! </strong>
<p>Thank you to everyone who has supported the project so far! I am so grateful to have such amazing friends and family supporting me each step of the way. There are still a bit more than two weeks left to the fundraiser, so don't forget to spread the word to help us reach our second objective. <strong> Let's try to reach 125%, or 10 000€. (Go big or go home, right?!?) </strong> All of the funds beyond the initial objective will help finance kitchen material to make life easier during the production process. For example a dough sheeter would help me spread out pie or croissant dough without breaking my back with a rolling pin! :D Or an extra mini dishwasher behind the service counter so the waiters won't have to go to the kitchen every time they need to wash a glass. Every penny counts to making this coffee shop incredible! Thank you all again for your unconditional support!! You have no idea how excited I am to get this project rolling!</p>
