Les éditions comète : From space to Saint-Léger
Les éditions comète Les éditions comète was founded by Félix Ollier in 2016 in Lyon. It's a publishing structure and a screen-print studio, Les éditions comète collaborates with French and international artists. They also respond to commissions from artists and communication studios. In its six years of existence, with a passion for screen printing and its infinite possibilities, Les éditions comète has printed hundreds of projects. The project In August 2023, the studio will move to a brand-new location in the hamlet of La Bussière in Saint Léger sous la Bussière, Saône et Loire, in a barn, it will occupy a space of around 110 m². A golden opportunity to create an optimal environment for working in the best possible conditions and improve print quality and its finesses. In addition to being a place to work, it is also intended to be a space for graphic research and experimentation, welcoming artists for creative and production residencies. These residencies will permit to artists to go beyond the simple principle of reproduction and actively participate in the printing process with the possibility to explore experimental techniques. These dedicated working times would facilitate the establishment of a privileged artist-craftsman dialogue, to best accompany the production of unique prints and objects. A lot of work is required to convert the existing building to meet the requirements of this workshop. Insulation, electricity, partitions, drains and furniture manufacture are all to be completed before we move in, in August 2023. This crowdfunding would help me to make this project real by finishing to equip the studio. Although a number of substantial purchases were made last year (a ¾ automatic screen printing machine printing formats up to 100 * 120 cm, an exposure frame and lamp, a developing and reclaiming booth, several plane cabinets, a squeegee sharpener and a guillotine), some essential equipments are still missing, including three extremely important items: -A plotter to print the films used for the screen making. -A compressor to supply compressed air to the printing machine. -A tank to flocculate and filter water contaminated by the screen printing process. A few lines to introduce myself My name is Félix Ollier and I'm 34 years old. Initially passionate about drawing and painting, I discovered screen printing by chance during a two-week temporary contract in 2012 with an industrial textile screen printing company. This contract was renewed several times over a 6-year period. I used this period as a training ground to learn the basics of screen printing. In 2016, I met Joël Blanc-Tailleur, who was in the process of finalizing his long-standing project for a paper-publishing / coworking workshop in Lyon's 7th arrondissement. At the time, he had just taken over an empty space, and I was enthusiastic about the project, so we set off for 5 months of work to fit out the space. We named the place "Atelier Garage". After that, I had to relearn how to transpose the skills I'd learned on textiles to paper. Within this space, I became a professional freelance screenprinter and created a publishing structure : Les éditions comète. After 7 years at Atelier Garage, we decided to move to the countryside, in a peaceful setting, with my partner Lola and my son Zéphir. We found a farmhouse with a 150m² barn to convert into workshops. This new project is backed by solid experience acquired over the last 10 years and the intellectual and technical support of experts in the field.
Needs : Epson SC T-7200 plotter (used): 1,200 euros Plotter to print films for the screen making. This plotter model can print at a resolution of 1440 * 2880 dpi and has a 44-inch (111.8 cm) print width, so it can take full advantage of the workshop's printing capabilities. Compressor (used): 500 euros The compressor will supply the compressed air needed to operate the machines. The model we're looking for is a compressor with a tank volume of between 200 and 300 L, equipped with two pressure gauges, one for tank pressure and a second for delivery pressure. This detail is very important to maintain stable pressure during screen printing. Wastewater filtration system: 1254 euros A tank and a water pump is required to flocculate ink-contaminated water. This water will first be coarsely filtered and then treated by flocculation. The desired tank is a 500-liter conical tank with a low outlet for clear water and a very low outlet for soiled sludge, which once extracted will be treated at a waste disposal center. If the target is exceeded, additional funds will obviously be welcome, as a number of secondary but no less important improvements will require a substantial cash outlay. For example, a spare bulb for the exposure lamp, a spare blade for the guilotine, materials to build the workshop furnitures, tools to control air renewal and its thermal and hygrometric conditions, screen tensions, emulsion, ink, pigments, etc....
